Replacing sofa cushions

I want to replace the foam rubber cushions on my sofa. Can I just use the type of foam rubber that I've seen at JoAnn's or do I need to buy it elsewhere? I have no clue if it's cheaper to buy at JoAnn's with a coupon or if it would be better to buy it online or catalog?

Their are many many upholstery shops in the LA area. Check in the yellow pages then go visit them and see the quality of their work. Most will have their own fabric sources and many will take COM, but their labor cost will increase some. But their also many fabric outlets that you can save big on fabrics. Either take the cushions to them or for a more precise fit they can come and measure.

Seat cushion? Check if it's the cushion that is soft or is the support under the cushion 'giving' too much? If it's the support, slide a board or some magazines under the cushion and see if that helps. If that is the problem an upholsterer may be able to tighten the seat support. (Or you can buy seat reinforcements at Bed, Bath and Beyond.) Are the cushions zippered? If they are, reach in and re fluff what is in there and try adding more poly fill or some sheet foam.

There are some good foam spray adhesives out there. I used some to glue 2 cut scraps into one chair seat. But sometimes couch cushions are rounded on the edges, which wouldn't work good for an overall smooth look imo. Do the covers come off for you to inspect the foam inside? That would be the first step to check out. If they are equal sizes with smooth cuts and 90 corners, then I'd probably try gluing them together first and see how it looks and works. Worst case, it sucks and you buy new foam, which you may do anyway. I have a local foam store where I purchase my supplies, so maybe google that in your area. They have all kinds of foam options (thickness, firmness, etc) with higher quality at competitive prices to hobby stores. As far as reusing the fabric, I don't think that would look good to have a seam down the middle, plus you wouldn't have any allowances left. So buy new of that. I don't think JoAnns has the right thing for a sofa. Try calling a local upholsterer and ask them what you need and if they will sell it to you. You could also see if you have a foam shop in your area. There is one in the Roosevelt area of Seattle, but I don't know where you live.

For a sofa cushion I would think you would need at least 6 inch of High density foam.

Consider replacing them with something besides foam.

I did the sofa cushions with extra_firm batting and it worked nicely.

You have to use high-density foam that is made for furniture cushions, or you will end up with pancakes in a matter of months.

Don't mean to hijak but can I ask a question as well. I have down sofa cushions and they really don't hold their shape very well. Can I buy extra batting and over stuff them?
