Open floorplan paint color

Hello, below are pictures of our kitchen, breakfast area and family room. As you can see the floors are dark, the cabinets are dark and the furniture is dark. What color would YOU paint the walls?

You have a beautiful kitchen!

I had dark cabinets in my previous home and a very talented friend suggested I paint SW Restrained Gold. That color went beautifully with the cabinets, but I had a lighter countertop and more natural light than you do. I would look at a lighter shades on that same paint chip: Ivoire. I think it would complement your artwork very nicely as well.

BTW, your dog is very cute! Is that a Shih-Tzu?

Thanks! Yes, Monty is a Shih-Tzu. Below is a picture of our other Shih-tzu, Watson (from the rear) in the DR and Pics or our house (just to show that I am NOT AFRAID of color)and our neighborhood.

We had the same issue, as well, when we moved into our new home 6 months ago. I felt pretty overwhelmed by it and although I got so much good advice and help here when I posted a question about it, I just could not visualize the finished product alone. I ended up hiring a Benjamin Moore color consultant to come to my home to meet with me for an hour....she ended up staying an hour and 20 min and it cost $112...money WELL spent because I really did not know about undertones and which white to use for trim (who knew there were SO many?!) and flow and where to start/stop a color in such an open space, etc We used one color for our 2 story foyer, the stairway/catwalk area which opens to the back of the house, and the 2 story great room or family room, whatever...we elected to do this because visually when you walk in to the house from the foyer, you can see the stair/catwalk and over into the family room...I am happy with how that turned out. Our kitchen/morning room is adjacent to family room too, and we painted those one color... Our dining and living rooms are in the front of the house on either side of the foyer and they are each painted their own color So we used 4 colors in the big open space but they are complimentary and they flow well from one area to the other...Truthfully, I am still a little bit on the fence about the kitchen/morning room color. Great color although I NEVER would have chosen it myself, works very very well with the finishes in the kitchen, LOVE it in the kitchen itself, but not sure about it in the morning room....maybe too dark, not sure. But its paint and I can change it down the line if I want to. The biggest thing I learned is that really there are no hard and fast rules. Yes, there are things to consider, lots of things. But if YOU like the color then go for it.

Take a look at SW Repose Gray, Mindful Gray and Dorian Gray. They are in the greige family but have a hint of green. With your honey oak cabinets and green countertops I think you would like any of them. The Repose is lightest. We have used it in two bedrooms, a hall and home office. It works great with gray carpet, wood trim and white trim. Good luck and let us know what you decide and for sure show us before and after pics!

My husband and I have recently completed our new home and had the same goals you have. We wanted a warm grey and some complimentary colors to coordinate with our blue accents. We settled on SW Colonnade Gray for the main living space and kitchen, while incorporating SW Gauntlet Gray into our dining room and great room ceiling. The fireplace and interior doors have been painted SW Black Fox. The combination is warm and cozy and works well to create a cohesive feel throughout the open concept while still providing distinction between areas. I think Colonnade Gray is worth looking into. We have lots of browns in our flooring, fabrics, and accessories.

The outline is the box insert that stays. The black granite or marble boxed surround and mantle will go. Looking to have tile wall and fireplace somewhat flush with each other. Probably a floating wood mantle. Deciding between the two tile samples sitting on the floor. Not worried about the resale as this house is on the water in Florida panhandle and will only continue to increase in value even with the eyesore fireplace. Worth seeing if the portion marked off above the firebox can be tiled on in order to minimize the scale of it ( I like your idea). I just don’t think it will be practical/ possible to do with the heat that comes out.... but I will definitely ask my tile installer. I love the idea.

What a pretty neighborhood - and your house is stunning!

My MIL has a Shih-Tzu who is the most precious dog. I grew up with cats, but DH can't stand them. We have a sweet (and hyper) Australian Shepherd, but had I known how cat-like Shih-Tzus were, I might have gone for that breed. In my mind, they have all the best qualities of both pets.

Getting back to paint, I have the same dilemma as you do in my kitchen. Although I have light cabinets, I have a sea of black granite, one small window above the sink and no direct sunlight. I love color but am hesitant to go too dark and steal the existing light I do have. My plan when we moved in was to paint Ivoire in this kitchen, but it doesn't go with the lighter cabinetry. Honestly, I think I'll have to get a paint consultant to come take a look!

Hi,
We used to have a Shih-Tzu when the kids were growing up and she was a wonderful little dog - loved her to pieces. anyways - it looks like you don't have a lot of light or maybe just an overcast day? I was reading an interview by Donald Kaufman and he says if you don't have a lot of natural light, light colors will turn grayish. Thats what happened to me in my kitchen - I had to repaint. He says to use a midtone color and it won't turn grayish, which is what I did and it looks great.

It's so nice to see a Victorian reproduction that is actually passable! Way too many Victorian reproductions don't hit the mark even close and end up looking ridiculous. Good job! And wonderful neighborhood!

No idea but your house is just LOVELY and I wanna get right done in the floor and cuddle that darling puppy of yours. I wanted one so bad. What did I get?? Border collie. Hehehehe 50 pounds of lap dog is a little overboard.
