Eye sore to focal area-Fireplace Reno

Suggestions on Reno for my fireplace. Bought house and fireplace is on a narrow wall in a bump out area in living room. Open floor plan. Paint color makes it look softer ( new paint is grey) but it stills looks smashed in the area and doesn’t fit the casual look of the interior. Looking to take out the surround, leaving firebox, doing tile from floor to ceiling with a reclaimed wood mantle that is deeper than current. Tile considering is Calcutta Gold Eclipse or a picket style tile...undecided. Open to ideas.

Room after painting. Small desk is not in the room was only assembled there and furniture is compressed in placement from painting.

How would you get a mattress up those stairs? A dresser? Spirals are great to access open lots above, but they totally suck to have for access to a 2nd floor. Your first fireplace pic is probably a electric one or a faux one. You cannot have wood that close to the firebox and it doesn't have a hearth. If the fireplace is as old as you say it is, then you need a chimney sweep out to inspect the flue. It may be damaged, but it is certain to be full of creosote. If the stone wall gets "hot" as you said, that's a BIG RED FLAG. It should only be warm to the touch. Your insurance company will want a report from a flue inspection before deciding if your home can be insured with that fireplace as active. My insurance company required that our fireplace either be redone or decommissioned. We chose to decommission and place candles in it. If you want to cosmetically redo the fireplace, you are looking at 3-5K. If the functionality is compromised and it needs to be rebuilt, then you are looking at another 3-15K, depending on what the damage is and which options you choose. Blocking off the flue and leaving it alone would cost you less than $500.

I've made so many exciting changes. I love my new colors, greens, browns, accenting with rust, and will post pictures soon. Sorry,furniture arrangement remains the same. I bought two round oversized wood tables,and a matching oval coffee table, painted walls Old Salem Gray, added a couple area rugs,living and entryway, finished sewing interlined plaid drapes last night,now I am trying to decide how to hang them, added a couple embroidered flowery pillows, seems like the list goes on and on. I need to paint fireplace brown yet, buy new lamps, a picture, and accessories. Do you like either of these ideas...built in shelves with , cabinet doors possibly painted Whitall Brown, same color I plan to use behind the tv or the Floating Shelves painted brown. I don't really like the paneling look on the builtins but I thought the brown cabinets below to match the brown above the fireplace would work ?? These are the shelving /bookcases INSPIRATIONAL pictures I think will work. Do you like them?? Thank you so much for inspiring me to make CHANGES...I've been waiting to move, and now I love my "new home"..well not really, but I'm feeling in style now with painted walls!! Will post entry, living and kitchen pics soon. Today I am sewing my patio door drapes, in a fabulous multi colored stripe. tcufrog - The railing area overlooks into the staircase below. See example photo: cpartist - i see what you mean about it not being balanced though. The example photo above has the fireplace centered on the wall, so maybe mine with the bookcase looks unbalanced. I do really want to have a bookcase to put the TV. Here's a couple of other options based on your comment. The first one has just the cabinetry like you were suggesting, the only difference is that I didn't keep the shelf at the top - just kept it all open. There's a window in the staircase so it would let light in here. The second one walls off the entire wall and moves the TV over to the bookcase on the right. Thoughts?

Perhaps it is load bearing. I ask because I wondered if you took it down whether you would have a longer wall to work with. Do you need the left door? I am assumng the fireplaces are in a wood-structure wall covered with decorative stone. Or is your house made of stone? It seems to me that if you can bear the sight of the right-side fireplace, it would be a simple matter to create a large shelving unite that completely covers the left side without removing anything. You would no doubt want to change the ceiling lighting, which would be more work, and you might want to remodel the right side and change it to be something you like looking at more. I think it would be harder to simply cover up the right side because of the way it meets the doorway on the right side, and that entire area. (Perhaps if you are willing to lose that door, creating a ”false” wall that hides the whole shebazz gets much easier — but only a contractor can tell you, and about whether actually removing or sealing up one or both fireplaces is doable. Here are some ideas that maybe you could borrow from when thinking about how you would could create a new design you like. Obviously they are not exactly the shape of your room but maybe they are useful for deciding on style and direction

Lastly view of open joined kitchen. Backsplash behind stove is being changed to Calcutta Gold Herringbone (complimentary to the tile picked for the fireplace wall)

I would remove the entire fireplace. Its an add on by someone, and it doesnt go at all with the room, and it is the totally wrong place for one to be. If you just have to have a fireplace, find another wall, and get a really nice electric one. They make fantastic realistic ones these days, and super easy to install.

Cat_ky I agree but it wasn’t and add-on. In the original plans. I dislike how the wall is designed and it’s placement. My husband wants to keep the fireplace and it does get used ( gas). I won’t get him to agree to a structural move so I want to make it look better since I have to live with where it is. Got any other ideas knowing that info?

I like the choice of tile for the backsplash and wall. However I still think that the location of the fireplace is not ideal. Recently I saw a home while house hunting where the owners had a similarly awkward location for their fireplace. The house sat on the market longer because of that reason.
I wonder if more of the fireplace can be covered with brick or tile to minimize it.

The outline is the box insert that stays. The black granite or marble boxed surround and mantle will go. Looking to have tile wall and fireplace somewhat flush with each other. Probably a floating wood mantle. Deciding between the two tile samples sitting on the floor. Not worried about the resale as this house is on the water in Florida panhandle and will only continue to increase in value even with the eyesore fireplace. Worth seeing if the portion marked off above the firebox can be tiled on in order to minimize the scale of it ( I like your idea). I just don’t think it will be practical/ possible to do with the heat that comes out.... but I will definitely ask my tile installer. I love the idea.

I saw the idea on Pinterest but I would have to check if the people used the fireplace after covering most it. I honestly like the tile style you picked a lot.

Shemeeakah Powell, thank you. I wish I could move it or do away with the fireplace but my husband wants to leave it and thinks there’s nothing wrong with it. So, that being said I’m happy to be able to modify it to at least look better.
