CL Find - Chair

I have been looking for a chair for my daughter's room and was wondering if I bought this and had it reupholstered do I have to keep the flared lines at the top. I would like to make a more simple chair without the stitching. They are only asking $10 for it. Temporarily I can always get a ready made slipcover, do they make them for swivel chairs? Do you like this chair?

I like it. I don't know much about reupholstering but I wouldn't think you'd have to keep the lines. The price is right!! I know they make slipcovers for swivel rocker chairs... I just did a quick search and didn't see any like the one above.
Hopefully Joann will chime in. She's the reupholster Queen!

I can have it for $5 if I pick it up this afternoon. I think it would look cute if reupholstered.

Aunt Jen, I LOVE the rattan shown in your link. I definitely like the more mid-century looking stuff and have been hoping for that for a while. But I've been checking CL for what seems like ages and I can't seem to find a set with cushions that isn't $$$. Carrie, I actually did think about painting it but this is furniture that we will be sitting on in (dry) swimsuits and shorts, so I didn't think the painted fabric would feel very nice next to our skin. It never occurred to me to dye cushions. Yours look fabulous! What a terrific idea. I will DEFINITELY keep that in mind for the next great buy. Dying won't work with this stuff because the cushions are attached. BTW, Carrie, your wicker really is beautiful. And sunroom furniture IS shockingly expensive. What is up with that? I have to tell you guys it was pretty funny when I went to see the furniture. The seller just bought this house and had tons of workers there - painters, landscapers, carpenters. As I was staring at the couch he was walking around with the decorator getting her opinion on what needed to be done. I was dying to jump into their conversation. I knew I didn't want the furniture but I stood there for a few minutes just to eavesdrop! From what I could figure out, the decorator was giving him some good advice. I approve - LOL! Nicole

Oh thanks everyone for the votes of confidence in it. We normally sit 4 around a table, so I think we can squeeze 6 around when needed (legs and all). And for $150 for real wood I wouldn't have to worry about the table with little ones because I can always refinish it. I think I may go for it! Maybe with some TLC it will look like a really expensive set. :)

Nicole, good for you for finding a way to make the chairs work for now, they are great chairs in such good shape. Are you sure, though, that you only need 4 yards of fabric each? I ask because I used 7 yards on my little chair. However, a fair piece of that was used to make the welting (although I made way more than I needed!). I used CL fabric on my chair, but when I was looking for the dining chair fabric I was floored at the prices. That is why I'm using a table cloth to cover the one I'm presently working on! ;) Trancegemini, I am now kicking myself for not taking photos of the reconstruction of the chairs! Yesterday I started to rebuild the wooden chair shown above, and I started from scratch with it! I added all new webbing, replaced the springs and hand tied them, new burlap and now all new padding. I have tear-down photos of both chairs, but got so involved with putting things back together that I didn't think to record that process! Next time for sure. Double welting is the decorative trim used to cover raw ends, and I see from the link I just found that I can still use this on my pink chair looking at the way it is made, but I would have to purchase a special foot for my machine. The simple answer is yes, but. You can grab a pattern from your local fabric store. They do make them for recliners. Or if you've ever made your own patterns, you could treat the bulk of the chair like any other upholstered chair (pin fabric wrong sides out, draw across with disappearing ink, etc.) and then sew elasticized cozies (like little fitted sheets) for the moving parts taking extra care to line up the patterns properly.

It has some paint on the back of the chair fabric but I would slipcover it anyway. I just can't find a slipcover. My husband is not too enthusiatic about Craigslist. I bought some more of my children's bedroom furniture off Craigslist and it needs the tops refinished still. My list of things to do keeps growing. But the chair looks cute enough and hopefully it is clean and no bad smells.

I don't know how well the chair would look without the tucks on the back--that's what makes the shape work. If it's well made, it's well worth reupholstering. Otherwise, buy a ready-made slipcover and tailor that to your chair or find someone to make a slipcover.

I can't seem to find many barrel backed slipcovers and this is the closest I could find. I don't want to spend much because it is for a kid's room.

I think the lines could be removed in back and to give the chair interest you can add an accent pillow in front. How about trying to have some slipcovers made in matelasse? There was also a recent thread where Magnaverde discussed painting fabric as an alternative to reupholstering. I never would've believe it was possible myself, but the results looks amazing.

Yes, it can be reupholstered with the lines. You can have a solid back instead. Nice chair.

I got the chair this afternoon. It is in great shape except for it needs a good cleaning. My husband wants to see if I could try to reupholster it. How hard would it be? Haha! What would someone charge to have it done if I had the fabric.
