I love shutters, but my vote in this case is to leave them off. You are right, they look too narrow.

Yes, get rid of them. We have talked often in here about shutters, and how if they aren't the size that covers the windows, and if they are nailed on instead of hung properly in the window frame, they ought to be disposed of.

I don't think the eagle is enough. He looks a little lost up there. I'll think about it, and I'm sure other people will have ideas.

You could always frame the window with a 4-6inch frame in a contrasting color. That would give some definition to the windows and take away from the bare naked look of no shutters?

I would also get rid of the shutters, but I do like the added color they give your house. Not sure if I have any constructive suggestions for your blank space. If it were me I would put in two more windows if humanly possible. That would make a nice bank of windows across the front and give you more interior light.

Would also like to say that your grass is MAGNIFICENT!

Ideally, two more windows is the answer to finish it off properly as Kswl said. I'd remove all the shutters too.

You know that shutters should properly be mounted so that they cover the side window trim and the inside edge of the sutter is right up along the inside edge of the window opening as they were meant to hinge into and cover the sash.

You could measure and see if moving them in to the correct position gives you enough room to have correctly-sized shutters. It looks as though it might.

So many people have mis-placed shutters these days that correctly mounted ones are unusual. It doesn't really matter whether shutters could actually fit into the window cavity anymore (often they can't because screen/storm combos fill the rebate now). But if they are properly hung, they make windows look so much better.

Another vote to get rid of all the shutters....lower level especially. Those windows are really odd....look like a face with the eyes set too far to the side.
You need to minimize that...or else put in 2 more windows.
I would remove the shutters, paint all the trim on those top windows the same as the main part of the house and then put a trip strip across the front of the house below the windows and paint the top half a different color than the bottom. I think that will minimize those windows.

If more windows are not an option, and I certainly understand if they aren't, I am with tinan...Plant a small flowering tree (if you live in a climate that it would flourish in. Maybe a dogwood or a cherry?

I too would remove the shutters and like someone suggested - frame out the widows w/contrasting trim. I would also suggest ( and I could be all wet here) to move and slightly lower the flag pole to in front of the gutter on the left or to the far right. If you love your eagle - I would mount it below the bay window. Right now the front of that part of the house reminds me of a smiling face. I would put a tallish evergreen on the left corner to soften the corner. Maybe another tall evergreen somewhere else, but I would wait till I put the first on in to see if a 2nd is needed to soften another corner. Maybe add a coupla to your roof on the lower section.
I would probably want to add a window or two - but, if you can't then the above ways I suggested maybe a simpler fix.

I'd invest in a fairly large (already) tree, planted not smack-dab in the middle of that facade, but rather toward the left side of the lower window (not to its left, but toward the left side). A nursery could suggest something that would be the right shape for your spot and variety for your climate. Probably something that's not too dense so it doesn't block light for your basement window. If you opt for this solution, be sure to leave space for the branches as the tree grows (i.e, not too close to the house).

For me, the eagle in its current spot draws attention away from your pretty and inviting entry area and also emphasizes the large expanse of blank siding.

Don't you just want to slap the architect who came up with that idea? Absent any other ideas, I kind of like the eagle. It's not so big as to be weird, yet it is something to fill the void.

I'm not a fan of the shutters, but taking them down and doing nothing more would make things worse, IMO.

I hope someone can do a mock up of this.....

You know how some windows have one shutter that is offset to cover the whole window? Maybe that would work for you and balance things out more because the mass will be towards the large blank center. One properly sized and mounted shutter for each window - like these. All I can find to show you is board & batton but I think other styles would work if you don't care for that.

Update: Photo of finished siding. I love the idea of adding windows but that is not an option, however @dml2000 has an interesting suggestion, single large shutter on the inside of the windows, I am warming up to the idea of Board and Batton . We also put in a new front door a rich wood look and if we add any shutter style it will also be a wood tone.

Could you add fake shutters that are closed to make it look like there are 2 add'l windows???

Otherwise a tall tree or 2 will be your friend.

The new siding looks great - and without the previous shutters, it looks greatly improved already. The one side shutter is a good idea, and how about the tree? Here's a very crude photoshop of how it might look with a japanese maple...

How about living with this for a while? I don't mind the way it looks. A tree is a nice idea as tinan has suggested, but what about also creating an interesting flower bed on the side of the house? I realize you don't want to block the basement window, but you can carve out a bed for more plantings.

Removing the shutters proved to be a great idea! The new siding looks very nice as is. If you decide to do some landscaping I wonder whether a horizontal trellis (arbor?) along the entire lower part of your upper siding would be something to consider.
