I know I should visit a store but online shopping is just so much easier right now due to my schedule.

Just so you know, with most blackout shades, some light comes in from the sides. Inside mounts tend to have larger side gaps than outside mounts, letting in more light. Multiple shades will let in more light than one large shade.

96 inches wide is very wide for a single blind. Can you take a photo of the window and post it? There might be other options we can suggest. For example, if you are going to be opening and closing every day - and maybe more than once - blackout curtains may be an easier choice.

Our Andersen windows (double hung, tilt-wash style--400 series?), have a narrow depth, so our Hunter Douglas Designer Screen Shades (Roman style) had to be installed "over-mount" (screwed into the molding, or trim over/around the window). However, there is just enough depth to have micro-pleat shades installed inside the window frame (so they sit behind the screen shade, or whatever your desired "decorative" window treatment may be). They make a privacy micro-pleat, as well as a black-out version.

We had the black-out micro-pleat shades installed in our guest bedroom, and will likely have that version installed when our bedroom reno is completed. 99.9% of the time, the micro-pleat shades are pulled all the way up, so they are hidden behind the decorative shade's "cassette" at the top, and they aren't visible at all. The decorative shade is basically the only covering over the window when the micro-pleat shades are pulled up.

When my parents are visiting, they can lower the micro-pleats at night, to block the light over the front door (right above the window in question), and then raise them again in the morning to allow daylight to filter in through the decorative shade.

they are casement windows and the outside two open. they are 2x6 walls but the sills/trim seems narrower than I was expecting.

I have the navy roman shades from Lowes, Allen+Roth. We have them on east windows and they completely block that morning light. I got them about two inches wider than the outside trim. With careful measuring you can get them to meet in between each window. They do have cords, so you will need to screw on the cleat up high to wind the cord around to prevent an accident with the baby grabbing/playing with the cords. They carry them in tan and a dark red, not sure how dark they are. I love the navy. I mounted them above the top window trim and my valance covers the top portion.

You may want to visit Smith and Noble's website, even if you do not buy from them, as they have very good info about how to measure.

We had Hunter Douglas in our last house, and I was surprised at how pricey something so ordinary could be --- like 700 per window (YMMV, this was in the NYC suburb of RipOffVille)

How about room darkening drapes? If you used tab top or somethibg like that, you could draw the drapes when the baby is sleeping and open them when you want sunlight in.

My grand-daughter will be two this month and my daughter has your problem with her not sleeping with any light coming in.
We have tried black out roller shades and no matter how they are hung still get some light in the sides or top. Then at my house for when she sleeps over, I just changed the window to black out drapes that can easily be pulled across with a bit of an overlap to ensure all light stayes out of room. I went over about 6 inches on either side of window and up a good 12 inches on the top. Then to the floor. This has worked out the best. We wish we had done that from the beginning at daughers house.
They are a bit expensive but maybe you know someone who sews that could help you make them. Believe me the best money spent.
Important to have them on rings that you can slide easily.

i put a blackout roller shade on my one son's double window... so about 70" wide... it is an outside mount. there definitely would be more light seeping in through the sides if i had done 2 shades. i hung a valance over the top to hide the roll.
it looked fine and has done a great job of blocking the light over the years!

If you use 3 roller shades, you will have at least a 1 inch gap between each. This will let a lot of light in. If your set on that roller shade because it matchings his crib then see if they can make one to span the width of all three windows. It won't be too hard to operate because it will come with a beaded chain control that attaches to the wall for child safety. Just pull the chain and the shade goes up and down. If you do this, have the shade made so it overlaps the trim on each side by 1 inch. This will cut down on light getting through on the sides. You can always put up a couple of side panels for total room darkening.

I've tried all the options, well almost, for both my kids' rooms and my husband's office where he needs it dark for reading images on the computer screen, and room darkening drapes are by far the best. I have purchased both inexpensive room darkening drapes at Target and the roc-Lon blackout liners.

The dark colored curtains (navy or chocolate brown) from Target (or Penney's) work the best and I mounted them a good six inches beyon the trim to keep light out from the side. The lighter colors don't work as well.

The roc-Lon blackout liners work great too. I originally purchased them to attach to the existing curtains in my kids' rooms but they were too heavy and cumbersome. So I ended up purchasing a double rod and hanging the blackout liner on the inside rod and their curtains on the outside rod.

I've used blackout roller shades but light comes in on the sides. When I had those I either used Velcro to get them to stick to the window (not attractive) or hung thick shades that hung to cover the side gap.

We have both shades adn the curtains from Penneys on the windows. That has worked the best for us.

I'd see if you could do an outside mount roller shade that is the width of the window and use a valance over it. Separate will give too much gaps and let light in. I bought the Pottery Barn black out shades for my daughters room that hang on a tension rod under the balances, but not inside the windows. Still a little gap, but she is not super sensitive to the light.

If you are looking for light control, in my experience, I would go with one big long shade. Otherwise you will have a lot of light coming in between the shades. You will also have some light coming in on the ends of the long shade, but you can fix that by hanging drapery panels to cover it.

I talked to my mom, who is a fairly experienced quilter/seamstress about making me a drape.

She said she could...but she thought that it would be better if DS's circadian rhythms weren't screwed up by total blackness. Plus, she has to work on making the cushion for my window seat..

We really just have to match the effectiveness of "old towel over cheap miniblinds" so hopefully the roller shade will do. Maybe I will get the one long one instead of the three. I wanted the cordless lift for baby safety, but I guess if it is tethered to the window frame, it will be ok.

Your baby may not be light sensitive at all, just simply a light sleeper. The days are getting shorter now, so if baby is truly light sensitive he will be sleeping later naturally, black out shades or not.

If he is light sensitive, perhaps instead of trying to block all daylight, you could try leaving a lamp on all night long to mitigate the effect of the morning light. If he isn't light sensitive, the lamp won't matter. If he is, the lamp may mitigate morning light.
