Proper grounding of 220v/50A welder plug

I have recently ran power to my garage, using a subpanel sourced from the house. In order to use a welder (220v/50A), I ran #6 UF service. I split the neutrals and the grounds as it should be done in a subpanel, and drove a couple ground rods. I just got a plug for the welder, and I'm not sure what to do with the ground wire. The plug for the welder is a 3-prong, resembles a giant regular 110v plug.

The instructions with the plug said to put both the neutral and the ground wire onto the 3rd prong of the plug...but this seems wrong to me, as I have kept the two separate everywhere else in the subpanel system. I just wired the ground wire to the metal box of the outlet. Is this correct, or should I run both wires to the 3rd terminal as the instructions say?

Thanks for the help!
