Can you go with a semi-flushmount, with just a bit of chain or a connector that will let the light drop straight?

I don't think I'd put a flushmount at all. I would do sconces for additional lights or use recessed lights. There are recessed cans made for sloped ceilings that will allow the light to shine downward. See link below.

If your shower is open at the top, and code allows, you can also place a fan on the wall (or somewhere on ceiling) and a single light over the shower. I'd suggest that for a cleaner look. I've had the light/fan combo and prefer what I now have.....separate fan & light.

If you do the light/fan combo, have the electrician put the light portion on a separate switch. I found there were times when I wanted a light but not a fan!

Very interesting. Annz, why do you prefer the separate fan and light? I've been killing myself trying to find a nice looking combo package so I'd be interested to hear why you prefer the alternate set-up.

As you've found, it's difficult to find a combo package that isn't bulky looking. Last time I shopped for one I couldn't find a design that worked well with our 8' ceilings, especially when located over the tub/shower.

Another criteria I had was that the fan had to be quiet and of good quality and when I found a brand that met those requirements, I didn't like their light combo! :)

Did you look at the Fantech system? Their fan is located in an attic or outside wall with ducting only to the bathroom. Their fan ceiling cover is a simple recessed circle with a recessed light in the center. It is the quietest (nearly silent) fan I've ever heard. I love mine - got the halogen option so it could be dimmed. They can be installed right in the shower.

Personally, I would never put a recessed downlight in a bathroom - such an unflattering light with all those shadows! Sconces would be best and/or a small pendant.

Hey wi-sailorgirl.... whatever you decide, I recommend you err on the side of too much lighting! I am sad about how the lighting on our modern master bath turned out. The room is about 6'3" x 13'3" or something like that. Here's what I used for lighting:
1) Restoration Hardware 12" Turner Flushmount over the tub (2x 60w)
2) REstoration Hardware 9" Turner Flushmount over the toilet zone (2x 40w)
3) Fan-only (Panasonic Whisper something or other) in middle of room
4) Recessed shower light (Progress Lighting) over shower
5) 2x Restoration Hardware Albion Sconces, one on either side of 5-foot vanity, 60w each.

OK, so that's a lot of $$$ spent on lighting, and dimmers, and everything, but it is NOT ENOUGH LIGHT. All of the RH fixtures have frosted glass shades, so the amount of light coming from them is very low. I really can't see well enough to put makeup on at the vanity (which is a rare occasion for me, but, still!!!). It's a bummer!

Anyway, back to your dilemma about the slanted ceiling. Our LR has a similar slope, and I thought a flushmount would look too weird. There, I used small mini-spots, sort of like track light heads but without the track. If I could have used recessed, I would have, but for heat loss reasons there I could not. They do make recessed for sloped ceilings.

If it won't make the room look too busy, maybe sconces are the way to go, but I urge you to try to look at them in person first if you can, to see how much light really comes out of the shades! Or a combination of recessed and sconces. I don't think the recessed would be too harsh at all if combined with some side lighting. Or, as was suggested above, how about a semi-flushmount. I've seen some nice modern ones that are like a flat drum shade that hangs down about 6" below the ceiling mount.
