Electrical box smaller than receptacle

I have an electrical box in the garage ceiling that is currently housing a light bulb. I'd like to replace that bulb with a receptacle, in order to install fluorescent lighing. However, the receptacle does not fit in the circular electrical box: the distance between the two screws at the ends of the receptacle is bigger than the distance between the holes in the circular electrical box. Here's my attempt at describing the problem.

Is there any standard solution for fitting the receptacle? Is there any smaller receptacle that could just fit?

All you have to do is buy a 50 cent circle cover that has a duplex cut out in it. Or even simpler, buy one for an over-priced $2 that has the outlet already mounted to it. The outlet can have the yoke removed, the metal part with the screw hanging on it. The plate then mounts to the box, the outlet does not actually screw into the box, just the plate.

Ah hah! You are trying to put a rectangular peg in an octagonal hole!

Easiest solution:

Carefully measure the distance between the screw holes and trundle down, tape measure in hand, to a big box store (e.g., Home Depot or Lowes) or a hardware store (if there happens to be a decent hardware store left in your area).

If you're working with a standard 4" box, you shouldn't have any problems finding an octagonal box cover with a receptacle already attached to it that will bolt right onto the box. (You might want to attach the wires first, though.)

[Alternatively, you may find a metal box cover with holes in it matching a receptacle, but sans plug. In this case, you need to buy a receptacle to fit and attach it to the cover with a single screw in the center. You'll also need pliers to get rid of the "ears" on the receptacle.]

If you're working with a smaller box, and you can't find a solution at Home Depot, you might try stopping by an electrical supply store with the dimensions of the box.

In any case, to avoid having to replace the box, what you're looking for is an octagon or round box cover designed to mount a duplex receptacle. They ain't all that pretty, but it is your garage ceiling, right?

As a follow-up to texasredhead's post, why is it that when these older posts are resurrected, the poster's display name is displayed as an email address only, with no other info available? "You will not find a single gang box metal or non-metallic, with knockouts on the side of the narrow dimension." I still have plenty of single gang expandable boxes with knockouts on all four sides. The built in cable clamps are on the smaller dimension (top and bottom typically) while an outside cable clamp must be used on the knockouts on the long sides (left and right typically).

Fred S - I guess my inspector isn't up on the 2011 code! He was a bit testy when I wanted to confirm that it would be OK to run the plug wire through 9" cabinet to an outlet under the sink like I would be running the DW discharge hose. He read the code to me again (about "adjacent") and said he would have to look up how NEC defined "adjacent", then decided that it couldn't run through the 9" cabinet because that is not an adjacent space. He said to hard wire it and use a breaker with a thingy on it in the main box. I'm going to wait a few months in the hope that he will forget about a call from someone who wanted to know if through a 9" cabinet would be OK. From the comments here I decided that this is what I am going to have done: A GFCI receptacle under the sink. Wire with plug run through the 9" cabinet and sink cabinet, using cord management grommets to protect the wire from abrasion (probably unnecessary). I'll have a thingy put in the fuse box anyway, so there will be two disconnects. Maybe he will be so smitten with my fail safe double protection that he will forget that there is a wire through the cabinets to a receptacle that is not in a space directly adjacent to the DW. If it doesn't pass I'll have it redone - hard wired and thingy in the fuse box even though that sounds stupid to me. Or hardwired with switch under the sink like some GDs and a thingy in the fuse box. Thanks to everyone for your ideas and exchanges with one and another! Very helpful to know that there is no one answer and how it is that you electricians think things out.

Apart from the code requirements & possible updating of wiring, you will need a space/area of roughly 3" wide to fit an electrical box. That can be achieved by locating it on the side of an end-of-run cabinet, behind a drawer, if you have one in that location. Of course that will also depend on how deep the drawer is. You can also add on a 3" filler or column box somewhere in the island design. This can be between cabinets or on the end of a run. I do this often when a peninsula has a DW at the very end of the run. I place the 3" column box at the end & that's where the electrical box is placed. Bring the wiring up from the basement or crawl space into the the filler/column box or at the back of the drawer cabinet. The fact that you have a finished basement is unfortunate as there is no other way to run wiring to the island. You can not just run it along the floor. Now, what has been pointed out is that building code requires certain things that you really should consult an Electrician about. Unless you are familiar with building code & electrical, this is not a DIY project. Leave it to the certified professionals.

Thank you for the quick answers. I don't exactly know how a box cover looks like, but I'll check out HD tomorrow. And actually, look IS important, otherwise I wouldn't be replacing the light bulbs that work just great with diamond aluminum fluorescent fixtures :)

My box is 3 1/2'' round, but HomeDepot only has covers with receptacles for 4'' and up boxes. I bought a 4'' cover and I'll put holes to match the 3 1/2'' span of my box.

It may seem picky of me to add this post after you've apparently solved the problem to your own satisfaction, but, all things considered, it's better not to modify parts when the correctly fitting part is available at such a small price.

You'd probably have to stop by an electrical supply store to find a box cover with receptacle for a 3 1/2" JB, but they do make them.

Thanks Tom, I'll check out a specialized store and replace all the covers if I can find the right thing. I gave up after the HD salesman told me he doesn't think such thing exists, because of building codes.

Fortunately I now know better.
