I would divide the living room into multiple functional areas, such as a conversation area near the windows, a TV watching area away from the windows. That will break up the long wall.

I would choose some warm colors (you said you want a homey feel) that you like and that will complement each other since you will be able to see them from one room to the next. Maybe a warm caramel in one area, with a green in another and yellow or gold in others. Or you could go for dramatic and do deeper, bold colors (navy and caramel are amazing together). Hard to say since we don't know what sort of colors you like really. I would not, however, leave the kitchen as is-it doesn't do anything for the counters or cabinets.

I also would put a seating area in front of the windows and another that doubles as a tv watching area in another section of that room (unless you have another room designated for tv in which case, two separate, but coordinated conversation areas would work). It looks as if you will have your dining area there as well, so once you have furniture in, the space won't seem as intimidating to you.
