Can someone please explain this to me:

I keep reading posts that are pretty much saying that Stepparents who raise their skids should have no opinions on how to raise them. When I am speaking of raising them that includes stepparents whose SKids live with them on a full-time basis. I honestly think that when skids are at a home decisions at that home should be made by the people who live in that home, whether it includes a stepparent or not. Why should stepparents have children that live in their house and have no say what goes on there?

As a child I had stepparents. At my fathers house my sm could tell me no to something or have me do chores when I stayed there EOW. When I later lived with them full-time my sm even grounded me, without consulting my dad first. I did not think anything unusual of it, nor did I hate my sm. At my moms house my sd disciplined me by grounding me or sending me to my room, even when my mom was not home.

Why is it that on this forum stepparents are supposed to be "seen and not heard"? If a stepparent has the best interests of the child in mind why are some saying it is unacceptable for them to take part in making decisions for them when they are raising them?

I am raising my skids full-time, with my dh. Their mom does not even live in the same state! So, why would it make sense for her to have more say than I do when she has no idea what even goes on in their lives? Giving birth years ago does not make her know more about her kids than I do. I do not think seeing them for a few weeks once a year makes her more knowledgable on them than I am.

My dh and I raise my biochild and his biochildren as if they are all "ours". This means that either one of us can correct a childs behavior or dish out chores and punishments, without calling the other one at work to okay it. We both have a say in important decisions regarding the children. We both reward the children, love the children, and take care of the children.

This works well in our home and all the kids are well-adjusted kids. They refer to eachother as "brothers and sisters" not stepbrothers or stepsisters. They are close to eachother and to both of us. Why is this a bad thing?
