SD Pregnant - Retirement Plans Shot

Where do I begin? My husband and I have been married for four years and have been together for six. He has two children, a 23 y.o. son and a 20 y.o. daughter, who he raised along with his mother and step father when the children's mother left them when they were toddling. Needless to say, they are very close, and this was something that attracted me to him from the beginning actually because I have a 15 y.o. son (was 9 at the time) and I loved the idea of combining our families. He is closest to his daughter, who has been his "little girl" forever and always will be. I accepted that from the start and tried to give them space for that relationship but she has always been very jealous of me and sometimes just downright mean. I entered her life when she was 15 and hoped that we would all grow on each other...and to a large extent we have, but there are still a few things that bother me.

We had been engaged for a year when we spontaneously decided to get married when traveling through Eureka Springs, AR on the way back home from a week of out of town work. After the wedding, my husband called his daughter half a dozen times and raced home to see her, and she subsequently spent all of my wedding night in our bedroom chatting. By the time she left, it was the day after our wedding and the whole experience left me disappointed. I got over it.

Every year since on our anniversary, SD has some drama that just happens to fall on the day of our anniversary that demands her father's attention. I just found out last week that she is pregnant (not good news) and her baby is due on our anniversary. To date, I haven't had a wedding day or anniversary with this man that didn't revolve around SD.

Am I being petty here? I just can't tell anymore, and I feel like I am just drowning in madness. My sister-in-law told me a year ago that when SD found out we got married she was very upset because she claimed her dad had promised he would never get married again after he divorced his second wife, a woman the children didn't get along with. I was never aware of this beforehand and confronted my husband about it, upset that he would not let me in on this promise so I could at least know what to expect. He claimed he never made such a promise - that SD may have mistaken his claims to everyone that he would never get married again after his divorce as a promise to her especially. I find the entire matter creepy actually, true or not.

As I said before we just found out that SD is pregnant, and we were preparing to retire in five years. This news has put my husband in the position that he should extend his retirement to take care of SD and baby. Of course, I resent this. I can't help it.

I have finally gotten him to at least talk to me about it, but I still don't feel any better. My guidance to him to encourage his daughter to be more responsible is often misinterpretted by him as an attempt to abandon her. I wouldn't let any of our children go without, ever, and they all know that as long as we have a home, so do they, no matter what. However, what I would like is to know we aren't paving the way towards helplessness and dependence. I would like to see all three of our kids grow up to be responsible, healthy, successful and happy. I would also like a little appreciation every now and then instead of the constant disrespectful dialogue SD offers of self entitlement.

Above all my husband is a good man and if I didn't love him more than anything I would have packed up and moved on years ago. I understand that the decisions he makes regarding his children are those he can feel good about. I just hate to see his plans for his/our future and retirement so blatantly ignored. Am I a jerk because I care about this? Should my focus be more on his children?

Husband's mom is no help as she makes matters worse. She recently voiced her opinion when her older son died, that his grown children should get possession of the home he lived in with his wife for 16 years.

Am I losing my mind? Am I wrong? Some one please set me straight if I am. I am drowning.
