Tradition what?

This site has been good for me- I haven't talked too much to hubby since the Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday with his lazy(refuses to watch their kids-and there is 8 of them) grown up kids.

Boy, but he's been talking, LOL, and he did not enjoy how they let the grandkids go wild either. But he says that he wants to keep some kind of tradition. Whoa-if this is Thanksgiving tradition I was raised wrong! I suggested in a cool way that maybe going out to a restaurant would be good and he said I could but he didn't want to. I told him that's great because that is exactly what I was going to do. Didn't tell him I was going to rent a motel and have a whirlpool bath while he stresses out with his "Tradition".

I forgot to mention that I was the one who got the stepkids together in the first place during Thanksgiving...regretted that one! My hubbies kids had Thanksgiving, at their house mind you, for their in laws. So I asked them if we could have it the weekend before Thanksgiving and they agreed. Well then their Mom(one of her sisters had it for her- this is the 1st yr the kids said she had it had her house..this is another story, which is really funny) decided that she wanted to do the same on the same weekend we did...well, then we had to take a back seat to their Mom so now we get "fit into" the time she doesn't want. She either decided she wants it on Saturday or Sunday and we take the other one. Hubby gets fustrated on this one too but said he would do whatever to keep the peace. But normally they won't tell us until the day before or they will be on the way here. When they started having all these kids, which honestly I don't know why they wanted kids because they don't want to do nothing with them. One of the stepkids just recently took them on a vacation with them..before, we watched the little demons.
Bottom line is, if I had not felt sorry for their Dad, this would never would have happen...miserable. So, my hubby has some more words from me on the "Tradition" of his:-)

This is my husband's office, and I don't remember the brick or mortar color off the top of my head. Since the shape is similar to your home, I thought you might like to see it. This brick does have some variation in color that yours does not have, which makes it blend with the mortar a little better. However, from a distance, it looks fairly monochromatic. I will post a closer-up pic on the next post. For reference, the front door is black with some green like your shutters. If you are interested in the brick or mortar colors, just send me an email. I think your house is going to be beautiful! I love the traditional look and we are just about to start our home build, too. It looks like we may be building at the same time. I can't wait to watch your progress!

Did you ever get one? I can recommend my installer (who I think has NYC in his service area). Mine is inside my second floor apartment and has caused no issues. I have a large kitchen and a two oven aga; I did keep my conventional range too but only use it very rarely. It is handy to have for large or complicated meals and for cakes which need a longer bake at a moderate temperature. The Aga does make the kitchen extremely hot in summer; I plan to shut it off for June-August moving forward. It uses a fairly significant amount of gas too, costs me about $50 monthly to run it. As a cooking tool it is fabulous! Excellent breads and incredible roast meats or veg. I don't understand the 'moist heat' comment but think she means that the radiant heat keeps the foods moist inside; my sense is that the ovens sear the outside of foods very quickly so the insides remain moist. There is also (I think) less air exchange in the ovens so vapors from cooking linger which may also help prevent drying out of food. Basic things like rice or potatoes (boiled, baked, or roasted) are so easy and almost impossible to screw up. Brings large pots of water to the boil incredibly fast (admittedly, it can only do this once and then needs time to recover). The ovens are small but can be filled right up; you cook stuff right on the floors and can pile pots on top of each other. The Aga cookware slides on the tracks on the sides of the ovens so you don't need to use shelves; I keep one shelf on the bottom of my simmering oven but otherwise don't use racks at all for the most part. It is also lovely for keeping dry towels and dish rags and keeping the kitchen warm and drying shoes and damp coats etc. The three oven adds a useful addition of 50% capacity over my two oven, plus a more moderate temperature for baking. I have heard that the baking oven tends to approach roasting oven temperatures when cooking a large meal but using the cold shelf and the large roasting tin helps to create a cooler micro-climate within the oven for things that need less intense heat. If you have a good air conditioning system, you might be fine with just the three oven to run year-round. If you throw a lot of large dinner parties or think you might want to shut it off in summer, I would only install if you have space for a small conventional range or cooktop/wall-oven combo elsewhere in the kitchen. CRL-- you got lots of good responses about wool vs synthetics already, so I thought I would chime in with my experience with Flor tiles. There are many different styles of Flor and some work fine in a traditional home. We have had it in our heavily used LR for years and it has survived band practise and wine and many other challenges . I have a small box of extra tiles hiding under the sofa which I probably someday will need. As for now, if a tile gets heavily soiled, I just pull it up and run it under water in my kitchen and wipe it with a microfiber cloth. We have been quite happy with it. The only downside is that it is not a sit on the floor type of rug because it has no padding. That works fine with us (and it is easier for my MIL's walker to navigate between our hardwood floor and the carpetted area). If you like to laze aroun on the floor, though, it isn't optimal.

I’m sorry Leanna if you thought I was being preachy. Hard lessons learned:(. I know you have already spent a lot of money. I had a similar situation many years ago in a home we bought with a wall separating two rooms. I insisted it come down; hubby and Contracter said it can’t! The ceiling will fall down! I said fine, either way I’m not living in this house with that wall so figure it out! One lam beam later I moved in! Beverly gave you a wonderful solution to your dilemma. I know it came too late as you have already spent so much in the adjoining room! A consolation for not so much money could have saved you this headache. That was for future advice. Get a price on what it would take to do what you know you want.

Good for you Ruby! We did our *resturant thanksgiving* tonight and I think that is going to be our new *tradition* when we host. Lots less stress-cooking wise.

We also had a a bad behavior situation with eldest (from out of state visiting) his live in GF's 4 yr old daughter. Now I like little kids in general but I have to say this is the naughtiest little girl I have ever spent time with. We could barely visit with eldest SS as he & we had to CONSTANTLY deal with her acting out, intentionally spilling drinks-looking at us and pushing over her drink onto the table, hitting, spitting & eye rolling and on & on. Mother not much into correcting her. Nice gal but just kind of sits back and lets everyone else suffer & deal with her kid. Eldest SS expressed mucho frustration to me over this. I advised him to think long and hard before marrying into this. He lost his young wife to cancer a few years ago & I think he is more ready to settle down and not thinking about how tough this is really going to be.

Dh & I were SO relieved when they decided to go stay with other SS (that lives in our old house)and his GF the remainder of their stay.

I'm telling you 2 days & I was ready to either A: tan her hide or B. slit my wrists. I know, I know she is onyl 4.5 yr.s old- but I am serious, it was THAT bad. GS never ever behaved that badly-Ds either so I don't have much to compare too. I really thought maybe ADHD, but as time went on DH & I both saw mom just basically ignored all of it & left it to SS or us to deal with. Ugh. I have done my time!

I do feel bad for DH as he was very disappointed that he really did not get to spend any time with his son from out of town, but thats how it always goes down when he comes to visit. He gets more care from my family. But it hurts him and that makes me sad for him.

Next year I'll be at my folks 2000 miles away or on a cruise for sure and I think DH will join me..TG it's over!!
