My first Stained Glass - WIP

HereÂs a WIP picture of my very first stained glass piece. Just finished foiling. Next class will be soldering!

Learning to work with stained glass has been quite the adventure. I have been printing out "tips" from you guys for awhile Â and had a whole folder full of things that IÂve been studying. And of course, bunches of books from the library.

Lots of "firsts" for me:

1. Learned how to use glass scorer, running pliers and breaking pliers and finally know the purpose of each! You know, IÂm so surprised that there were NO directions with any of those 3 tools. Thank goodness for my class, and of course you guys, too!

2. Bought and used a grinder for the first time. Wow Â never realized how much time you could spend grinding. But Â cool tool Â love it.

3. Finally used my ring saw. (NT Â yeah, finally!) WowÂam just going to love this.

4. Cut glass and tumbled it manually. Just used a jar with water and dishwashing liquid (of course learned that from you guys) Â wow Â I was so surprised that in about 25 minutes Â the edges were sooo smooth!! These pieces are for mosaic mushroom.

5. Just bought the recommended tumbler at Harbor Freight Â havenÂt used it yet. And, OMG Â I now know what everyone was talking about with the smell. Thank goodness my work area is in the garage. Please tell me that the smell does eventually go away?

For this piece, I had planned to do all the cutting by hand (not use the ring saw), so that I would get practice at cutting. BUTÂthose tiny little stems on the peppers gave me fits Â and after breaking piece after piece on my last cut, I finally turned to the ring saw Â and cut all the stems on the ring saw. MUCH easier!

That is a great first panel!!! Good job! And good for you for taking a class, it is a good way to start! And YES the smell goes away(I think the more you use it!) I'm so glad you are having so much fun, I love doing stained glass! I'll be looking forward to your futre projects, you are already putting me to shame with such a nice first one!!!

LYNDALU: I do believe you have the "gift". Everything you touch turns to GOLD! That is a FABULOUS first piece! Beautiful workmanship!

looking for stamps you could use the alphabet stamps that go with woodburners or just by looking in the scrapbook section of your local craft store they are use to emboss metal or paper. and there is also leather stamps that could serve the same purpose , & stone stamps & do not forget you can make your own stamps out off polymer clay. these Ideas are what I use as you can tell I must have a messy craft area!!!!! WOW Becky, that is such wonderful news!! Exciting that you got picked to do the sign, and beautiful workmanship. I can't wait to see it installed like everyone else here. And I like the idea of free drinks all the time. Hmm did you add that to the price of your sign?? LOL. Well, maybe next time. So Robin, do you get a kick back everytime you spam us for Weldbond? You do realize that its against GW's terms of service to constantly post your commercial site, right? I normally don't give a crap but this is the 3rd post I've opened this morning where you've posted the same thing. Anadyne, stained glass mosaics are often done on table tops. As long as your surface is flat and no hollows are left under your tesserae, its not easily broken - unless something is dropped on it. If the table is subject to heavy use or abuse, some people will finish with a resin coating. Regular sanded grout is fine with stained glass. Any PVA glue is good for indoor projects, such as Aileens, Weldbond and I've even heard that Elmers can be just as reliable... Mac is like a cross between a white glue and crazy glue, its thinner than most but dries very fast and clearer. Its expensive though and for that reason I use it only under clears or TG and not waste it for opaques. Silicones and caulks like GEII, DAP and Polyseamseal are great for building up tess to level things and on vertical surfaces give you instant hold. But remember that anything containing silicone has fumes and varying levels of toxicity. I hope that helps some

Well, LADY, this doesn't surprise me in the least, that it's gonna be another masterpiece. In the beginning I was a little nervous FOR you cuz I could feel your searching and searching and trying to get a direction on this one. I said to self - in the end, she'll get it and it'll be a knockout. You lived up to my prediction to self. This is truly beautiful, and I LOVE the addition of the crash glass. HAZIE, if you got the glass in large sheets, IMO, that would take the fun out of piecing it back together puzzle-like.

I've not done stained glass... but it sure looks BEAUTIFULLY done to me!!! Congratulations! And... all those new tools! WOW! Obviously you're jumping right in and having FUN with them! Hooray! GREAT job!

Wonderful piece!! So glad you are using your ring saw!! That's on my list, but pretty far down right now.....it's wonderful that you are enjoying the class, too!! Can't wait to see more of your lovely work now that you have another skill to add in the mix!

Beautiful job lynda.Love the chili peppers.I got a ring saw 3 mo. ago but haven't opened the box yet.I'm trying to learn to cut by hand ,but think I'll break out the saw and at least see what it looks like.Great job.I sure would like to take that course with you in Miami...

Your first piece is great!!! I cant believe its the first one. You foiled those pieces so neatly, like you've been doing it forever!!!!

Class taught me so much, Im so glad I finally talked myself into taking it. You won't be sorry either!!

Wow! Unreal first piece girl!
I loved my class too...but mosaics are still my favorite.
I haven't played with solder in about a year. Great work!

Wish I had a ring saw...I'm jealous. My cuts are still terrible after 12year, never will get good at it, just have to make big solder lines. Good job!

Thank you guys so much for your compliments and encouragement. I'm just loving working with glass and like so many of you said, I'm so glad I decided to take the class. Hazie - I think I will be like you, in that mosaics will always be my favorite. The class has helped me get used to working with glass and all the tools that go along with it, which is helpful for mosaics, too.

You need a LOT more tools for working with glass (than with plates), but that's okay, cause I just love tools. Crazy, huh. Oh, well - I know I'm in good company! LOL

Oh, and I just finished my first mosaic piece with glass - a mushroom. I'll get a picture of it and post it tomorrow.

Thanks again. I'm a little nervous about the whole soldering thing. Anybody have any tips to offer me? I'll start soldering in this Thursday night's class.

Don't be nervous about the soldering! It my be difficult to get a smooth bead at first, but you can do it. This is gonna open up a whole new can of worms for you!! You'll be able to create lots of neat glass stuff.

I've been stained glassing for a couple years now and I still have much bigger gaps than this in my work! Congratulations!
