staging? Historical home...

Pal's "staging...schmaging" post got me to thinking. We own a 140+ year old home that is considered historical in our fairly small community. We have owned it for 10 years, but will probably be selling in 3-4 years when we retire. We have furnished/decorated it with mostly antiques. Over the time we have owned it we have added gardens, built a carriage house garage, and made repairs as needed (refinished original pine floors, etc). The kitchen is totally unfitted with free standing cupboards and a large cast iron sink on legs.

When thinking about selling our home, how much do we de-clutter? Do we "stage" our home so that it becomes more impersonal or do we clean and paint (as needed)when the time comes and call it done? We will probably sell many of the items in the home when we move as we are thinking to down-size at that time.

We also are not sure of the sellability (?) of our home, as it was not actively advertised for sale when we purchased it. The PO interviewed us before even considering our offer. We really do not know how much buyer's interest there might be from the local community. We are not considered local as we moved from a different part of the state (for employment)when we purchased the house.

We suspect that we would get many lookers-not necessarily buyers, due to the historical nature and also believe that was why the PO did not actively advertise it when we bought it.

What would be the best way to present our home when the time comes?
