Too quiet step-father makes my children feel disliked

I have been married to my husband for 4 years. I have 2 children (now aged 15 and 13)who live with us. He has 3 children who live with their mother in the same town (2 in college now and one is 12). He considers his children perfect (they are "A" students, musical and athletic). My children and I consider his children errogant, rude and back-biting. he does not see these qualities. But, we sure do. My children are good but average children. Rarely do they talk-back or act rude. My problem comes from the fact that my husband is too quiet. He rarely talks to my kids. The dinner table is silent, except my children and I talk. He does not say "hello" or "goodbye". He ignores them totally. He is naturely a quiet guy, friend have trouble talking to him too. He has always treated me like gold, but I'm starting to see that he has always tried to possess me. He wants me all to himself. He's tried to separate me from my kids for the past 4 years. He chooses activities in which the children are not able to come with us. He wants me to watch TV with him at night, but the kids do not feel comfortable watching with us because he makes them feel unwelcome. He hides cookies and food from them. He often walks in the room they are in and makes a heavy discussed sigh and leaves. I asked him how he has helped my kids in the past 4 years. He said he avoids them so he does not get irritated with them. I asked, "Why are they rude to you, are they bad kids?" He said "No, they are good kids, they are just loud and that irritates me." My 13 year old son just moved in with his Dad (2 hours away). I can't help but blame my husband and his rude children. My daughter is talking about how much she dislikes him, because she feels like he is trying to separate us. I have talked to him and I have started spending every night with my daughter. I feel no connection to him any more. I feel he has made life difficult for my kids. Since this all started he still does not talk to the kids. He had to call me at work to tell me that "I asked Paige how her first day of school was". He has not said a word to her before that or since. He is socially an idiot. He does not know what to say. I have tried to help him. But, his disablily is becoming mine. I just want to hibernate with my kids and tell them how sorry I am for marrying him.

I understand how you feel totally, My husband is exactly the same as yours,my daughter is 16 and hates him for what he has done to her. Its breaks my heart when he ignores and belittles her.

For me it has made my feelings for him change, today I have taken the step and I am seeing a solicitor (I am from England) to get this man out of my daughters and my life for good. I really feel for you and your kids and I think that if you still love him you need to spell it out to him either he accepts and respects your kids or its over.

My husband is so nice to his two sons when they stay that it makes me sick to hear him, that is really the only time he will speak to my daughter. I really think you need to talk to him about this, because your kids will resent you, I know because my daughter has told me that she feels like that towards me at times.

MissBunBun, I am sorry for what you are going through. Have you tried counseling? It might help if you tried individual counseling so that you can get some validation for your feelings and then ask him to join you. I know this doesn't always work, but even if he will not go, it would be a great help to you. Good luck, I will keep you in my prayers.

I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression. DH is great. He isn't turning a blind eye to SS's behavior. He realizes there's at minimum an "attitude problem" going on. SS's behavior got worse after his biomom left (again) last fall. She tends to come (after being gone for years at a time), promise to be a real mom, hang around just long enough to make SS think maybe she really will this time, and then disappear which is where I think the majority of SS's behavior is coming from, especially the unconscious behavior aimed at women. The physical incident between the 16 and SS happened after the 16 yo didn't shut the van right and in SS's mind if something wasn't perfect, I might leave just like his bio mom so all his anger at biomom came out backwards at the 16 yo. There's only been one physical incident but in a household with austistic spectrum kids, it just takes one incident and they think there's the pattern. I really don't want to make excuses for SS but I do understand why he's acting the way he is. I'm just not sure how to help him, try to keep things fair in the meantime, and not walk around being constantly ticked off at him. I"m thinking this is going to be my plan of action. Let me know what you think 1- SS starts seeing a counselor - as soon as one can be found- period - I"m not his biomom and shouldn't be punished for what she did. I would never ever treat him or anyone that way. and most siblings of children with disabilities have problems adjusting or relating to them, why wouldn't a teenager thrust into the situation, especially with not just one sibling but 3? 2 - Anytime SS doesn't do his 15 min daily chore he will not leave the room the chore was to be in (even if I have to sit on him and he misses his baseball game, pees his pants, or I'm late for work) until he does (making DH enforce the rules isn't adding much to my credibility with SS - It's almost like SS wants me to be the one to punish him) 3- If SS doesn't mow the yard properly with the riding lawn mower, he will use the push mower, even if I or DH have to follow behind him the entire time and make sure he does it all. 4 - the attitude will stop. If he can't see that we all have to work together, I just might try the strike thing and see how much he likes doing his own laundry, own dishes, making is own meals (probably just sandwiches since he can't cook and I"m not buying special groceries for him to eat alone and he wont' eat leftovers). Maybe then he might come to the conclusion, that even if he doesn't realize it, we all work together and people are doing things for him. 4 - the lying, "storytelling, "smart alec comments", whatever you want to call them - I'll just immediately call him on it. NO more games, no more him trying to outsmart me, no more trying to catch him in the lie, just quietly, and simply state "that's bs and you know it" and move on 5 - any attitude directed at the other kids will become immediate and lengthy family discussion and we all know how much teenagers love those, most likely followed by a grounding where he's required to be around the other kids and has to get along - no going to his room, no going to friends, etc (I'm in the office only 3 days a week so this should be able to be closely supervised). 6 - as for unfairness in material possessions, they'll each just have a dollar limit for school clothes, etc. IF SS wants to blow all his on one pair of shoes and one pair of shorts, so be it - he doesn't then get to complain that he has nothing to wear. 7 - as for the homework, DH and I discussed at the end of the school year, that we can check on the computer for finished homework - if the homework shows as not turned in on Friday (too bad if the teacher forgot to update it), the TV from his room is gone (no more cable, no more video games, etc) and he spends each night until bedtime at the dining room table doing homework and has to physically show us the homework (the exact missing assignment and any current assignments emailed to me from the teacher) is completed before being excused - if he says he forgot it at school the principal has kindly volunteered to go open up the school for him (the principal just doens't want it to become a daily thing, but I think we'll only have to call this bluff a couple times) - this one is going to take a lot of time, but again I don't think it'll be something that will always require as much time, just follow up, once he sees we mean it ok what does everyone think?

Your situation is sort of similar to mine. I didnÃ¢ÂÂt have a problem if my BF mentioned something about one of my daughterÃ¢ÂÂs behavior. But if I ever mentioned something about his sonÃ¢ÂÂs behavior, heÃ¢ÂÂd get defensive and it would cause an argument. The problem is the two of you have different parenting styles. Your BF is a wimp. He is scared to discipline his children. He does not enforce visitation. It doesnÃ¢ÂÂt matter if the kids donÃ¢ÂÂt want to come, he should make them come. BM is violating a court order if she does not allow the kids to visit. Also, you have no problem with your BF discipling your kids, but he has a problem with you correcting his. This is a double standard that is not going to work. You are in a situation where your children see someone their age disrespect their elders and get away with it. It will eat you up inside, not only will you have to put up with a sullen, disrespectful teenager, but you will feel the unfairness towards your own children who do behave. This was one of my concerns with my exBF. I knew it was not fair to my kids to live with someone who was allowed to misbehave while they were punished for the same offenses. I also cannot tolerate bad behavior in children, any child for that matter. And living with a child who constantly back talked and didnÃ¢ÂÂt mind would be very stressful for me. On top of that, having to keep quiet about all the bad behavior would drive me insane. You are trying to make excuses for your BFÃ¢ÂÂs poor parenting, but in the end you know he is to blame. He is the one that does not want you to discipline his son. He is the one that allows his son to get away with things. Good parents donÃ¢ÂÂt worry theyÃ¢ÂÂre going to push their children away when they discipline them. They arenÃ¢ÂÂt scared to discipline their children when they need it. There are legal remedies your BF can take if the BM is trying to turn the children against their father or denying visitation, so thatÃ¢ÂÂs no excuse. Your SS knows he has the upper hand with his father and has no respect for him. On top of that, he sees his dad telling you not to discipline him, giving the child even more power. It sounds like your BF does not agree with your kind of parenting. For my relationship, we both tried to compromise but even when I tried to relax and he tried to be stricter we still couldn't come close enough for the relationship to work. PART 2 he has spread lies about me all over town, has people look out for me and call him when they see me like I'm some kind of criminal. I've never been arrested or in trouble with the law. never was dishonest with them. matter of fact my honesty has been anmd still is used agaiunst me. his son is a dope head, has been arrested,for domestic violence, grand theft auto, breaking and entering, drugs, u name it. I still deal with the abuse because I need my adopted mom for a place to stay. I feel like a pile of dung for having to depend on her. its impossible to be independent when your making 10.50 hr. With a growing boy in school and fiance is hashing out problems with SSI as he is unable to work. and because she is brainwashed into thinking she needs him, he has control and messes with me however he can, yet i cant think of a way to kleep him away from me and quit messing with me. He set the pool pump to go on for 5 hours everyday and locked it and did the same with the sprinklers so we cant change it. I pay the water and electric bill. He's got the whole world it seems like convinced I'm on drugs. that infuriates me because no one sees that he's being dishonest and unreasonable. they all know his son is a skrew up and a drug addict and that he's been in all sorts of trouble. and I'm not yet they believe him. I wanna know where did his credibility come from? y are his friend and he's so stupid to believe him and not question his mean nasty things he says in such a mean nasty way about a child (when I was) and when he still talks so bad about me now, and to mainly the same people, now that I'm an adult and doing my own thing y don't they ever question him? I mean come on, it's got to get old at some point, this crazy white hair man running around can't keep my name out his mouth. y he is so hell bent on proving to the world that im a skrew up??

I agree with Cat about the marriage situation. I think the adult children problem will work it self out. It maybe that they will never be close to you, does that bother you? If you love the man try to work out a solution. I really think in most cases the 'kiddies' are jealous. Just be sure to discuss it with him in a calm manner and let him know how you feel. Try to keep emotions in check and a trip to a professional does help. It does seem that many adult children are not very 'adult' at all. I met DH when I was 47 and we started a romantic relationship when I was 48. He had transferred from the state where his adult children lived and each year he would pay for 4 to 5 of them to come for a week or two vacation. This cost about $5000! For some strange reason it was always the same oldest daughter that came with her children. I stayed out of it and they were polite. Then he retired and I still worked, they expected the same trips, plus send one of hers to France on a school trip, another two of hers wanted to come each year at Christmas, all at our expense. He had been buying Christmas gifts for each grandchild (12) from a list they provided, plus giving all three of his daughters $300 for gifts and $100 each to shop for themselves. Can you spell guilt lol!!!!! And his 3 girls took advantage of it. I was paying the house payments and other bills and the oldest had the nerve to ask him who was getting the house when he died. I told him we could not afford all of this after he retired and he agreed. That's when they started to get nasty with me, they do not even say hello when I answer the phone and my name is never included on the cards. Of course, it was all my fault. I explained to them we didn't have the same amount of money as before. I guess to punish him they stopped calling, send no cards Christmas, Father's Day, or his birthday. This hurt him deeply and he talked to a counselor. After we had been together for 6 years and a Christmas without hearing from them I called one of his sisters and explained what was going on. I asked her if she thought I was out of line if I called them, she said no, that she thought they were selfish. I wanted until DH went to bed (3 hour time difference, we were later) and I e-mailed one and told her how disappointed I was that as big of a family as he has not one of them could call him on Christmas or the other holidays. I said I would send her the pre stamped cards if that was the problem. I had the phone number for the oldest and I called her. I politely and calmly told her the same thing. She started screaming at me so loud I had to hold the phone away from my ear. She said everything was fine until I came along, he was retiring in their state until he met me. They all 3 did send cards the next holiday so it was worth it. They will not come to visit unless we pay for it. It is not that they can't afford it. We moved to a small area and they say there is nothing to do here. Doesn't visit your father count???? When we send gifts we never get a thank you and DH will call to see if they received the gift. The last time I embroidered 4 burp cloths and we mailed the gift. We had been invited to the shower in another state, but no one sent a thank you or even bothered to send a birth announcement. I told him this hurt my feelings and I would no longer make personal gifts for them. If he sends a gift it's up to him. We have discussed the situation and we met with an attorney and had all papers drawn up and the house is in both our names. It finally came to an understanding for him when his oldest called us last year and was telling him she had to put the kids school clothes on credit cards. I did fell a little sorry for her. 3 months later he receives a post card from Italy, she was on a 2 week vacation with her boy friend. His chin fell to the floor, but now he understands his daughter perfectly!!!!! His brothers and sisters treat me very well, but I did let him visit last year alone when his brother was in hospice so he could visit his children without the tension of ME lol!!!!

Was he like this before you got married? How did he act around your children then? I lived with a similar situation until I moved out a few years ago - my stepdad would get insanely jealous if my mother and I even wanted to go out for coffee, or she wanted to spend time with girl friends of hers. She decided she would go anyway, and that he would have to get over it. She still loves him, but obviously wishes that he would grow up. He's very insecure and immature, for someone who's approaching 71 years old.

I remember reaching a breaking point with my mother where I just thought I was going to lose it if he didn't just leave us alone for a little bit. That, I think, made her realize that what he was doing to our relationship. Slowly he has realized that just because she wants to spend time with her daughter or a friend that it doesn't reflect negatively on him.

My SD was always comparing me to his other five children, too, who were much older than I. Because they didn't go to college, I shouldn't go; because they didn't do this, I shouldn't, etc. I decided I wasn't going to let him hold me back or compare me to other people.

As far as you husband - have you talked to him? Confronted him about his behavior? (aside from just asking about your kids) Just say, "What is your problem?!" and seek counseling. And even if he decides not to go with you, maybe it will give you the confidence to stand up to this person and make an important decision about your relationship.

OMG! I just HAD to post to this one. You sound as if you are telling MY story! I posted my own question a couple weeks ago regarding the same type of man. I can tell you from first hand experience that this guy is not going to change. If anything things will only get worse from this point on. I know that's hard to hear and not what you want to hear. I've been there. I too was wishing for advice or some magic potion to make him 'see' what he was doing. I blamed myself, I hated the way he treated my kids. I let it go on for way to long. I kept hoping and wishing that one day I'd wake up and things would be different. I did finally wake up but looking back I know I should have gotten out a long time ago.
Sweetie... for YOUR sake and YOUR KIDS, GET OUT of that situation. Start now preparing to move on with your life. I can tell you that it's only going to get worse. I'm speaking from experience here. I finally did something about my situation. I filed for divorce (yesterday) and he moved out. I can't even express the calm and the peace I feel with him out of the house. My children simply glowed this morning. It's only going to get better for us I just feel it. Granted it's going to be tough financially but hey.. it's worth it to have that man out of our house. Above all else, don't blame yourself. The best thing you can do for your children is show them that no human being has to settle for that type of behavior. It's simply unacceptable. I made up so many excuses over the years for my husbands behavior. Always telling the children just to stay quiet and out of his way when he was home. We were prisoners to his paycheck. So scared that we couldnt make it without him. But I reached the point to where I wasn't scared of that anymore. It scared me more to think about what he was doing to my children's mental well being. I tried everything to get my husband to see what he was doing. He was so deep in denial that he would never admit to being the problem or even having a problem. It was 'all the kids fault' and my fault because he had no interactions with the kids. I'm talking... This man wold walk right past us on his way out of the house or into the house and not even look in our direction. He didn't even acknowledge our existance!! I never understood how he could not even speak. I thought how rude!
Well, it's his loss. I hope the silence in his new place is killing him. Meanwhile my house is filled with laughter. It feels like we've come out of a long winter. I'm a remarried man and live with a 9-year old stepdaughter and my wife, just 3 of us. We've lived together for about 3 years now. I am quite surprised that I do see some similiar things have been happening in our family as well. Frankly, I do feel insecure and alienated when my SD and wife are spending time together too much. I shouldn't feel that way, but I do and I can't help feeling that way. I even think that my SD is trying to alienate me from "them". My first reaction is to keep quiet and ignore them - just like what many of you said about their husband. But you know what? You would do the same thing if you are in the reverse situation. Well, not all but most of you. I haven't talked to my wife about "my problem" yet, but I think I will tonight. Maybe I might even have to go see a counselor...

Is your husband a quiet man by nature? My fiance' is the type that sometimes just doesn't feel like talking. It's taken a lot or time to get used to it and even now sometimes I think he's mad or something and he's not. His step father is the same way. He won't really talk or speak up unless it's necessary. In fact, FIL pretty much keeps his mouth shut about eveything and does as he's told just to not start a fight or something. MIL says he talks openly with her about stuff but may not with anyone else. It's only been a few months or maybe a year now that my fiance' says he'll open up and talk honestly with him. It's just his nature...Could this be part of the problem? Maybe he's not good with communicating with others, especially kids? Good luck to you.
