Am I able to do this by cutting, gluing & screwing?

I need some help please!

I want to "build" a rectangular dining table that will seat 6 people --nothing fancy. I've looked on-line for free plans, but have not had much luck. However, I DID find some general info, so all I have to do is work out the numbers.

I think this will work: the legs (4"w x 4"w x 25"h) , apron (1" x 4" x ???-- I gotta do the math!) , and tabletop (54" x 96" x 1")...right? Sorta right? Kinda right? Totally off ???

No breadboard ends, simple legs, simple apron.

I don't know how to do a mortise and tenon nor do I have the equipment for that. The lumber yard is going to be cutting all my wood to the dimensions I give them.

Can this be done by just cutting, gluing and screwing the pieces together?

Should the table top be one solid piece of wood (pricey ? ) or "slats" of wood?

Would those 4" x 4" legs make it look too clunky?

I don't want to use pine because it's so soft, but I would like to use a harder wood that will take a nice stain--any suggestions for this beginner?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Smiles,

Sooz
