Help! What area rug should I get with this furniture?

I need to get an area rug to go under

. I've done lots of searching and looked at a lot of different rugs, but am at a loss.

So, I am looking for advice on:

- Size. To get both chairs completely on the rug it would have to be at least 13', but I'd rather not go that large. Would it look weird to get a 8x11, and have the purple chair just have the front legs on the rug, since it's sort of a sofa-like chair. It's a large condo living room, with lots of room on the long dimension (about 13'x21').

- Color. Since the ottoman is dark, I would assume light is the way to go? Should I stick to a neutral solid like this? Or might something with some pattern and color work, like this?

- Style. Should I stick to solid? Would a contemporary / transitional pattern be "too busy"? What about this or this?

- Fabric. Standard wool or wool-like synthetic, or might something more like this (with some texture) be appropriate?

My two cents:

The entire chair (or sofa) doesn't need to sit on the rug. Just the front legs, or at least that's the guideline I generally follow.

Of the two rugs you linked to in your "color" category, I feel like the solid one is sort of ho-hum, and the patterned one seems like it's not the right choice with your upholstery. I do think you could go with some pattern, though...

Stylewise -- Your second link isn't working, and I think something like the first link could almost work, but the "flowery" sort of pattern, I think, is going to fight with the leafy pattern in your chairs. How about a stripe? I personally would love to see a rug that pulled out the turquoise and lime green colors from your chair fabric.

If I had more time I'd poke around online to find some examples of rugs that I think would work, but I'm running behind. Hope this is a little bit helpful!

I think it would like nicer if both chairs were on the rug especially since you have the room. Since your chair has a bold pattern and the wooden floor does do, I personally would go with a solid rug. Color? That's tough. It would be great if someone could photo shop some colored rugs in there. I'd love to see what the room looked like if you pulled a color from the patterned chair. I'm wondering what it would look like with that olive or a teal. I'm just thinking a darker color from the chair might anchor the patterned chair better than than a plain beige. I love the purple couch and chair.

You have a lovely room and it will be worth the effort to take the time to locate the right furnishings. Try Pottery Barn for to get some ideas about stylish comfort. Some of their furniture is on sale now. With down-wrapped cushions and down throw pillows, it really is possible to be comfortable without resorting to a recliner! Also, if there is a Bassett Direct near you, it would be worthwhile to visit the store, as they provide complementary design services. We had a very good experience with a store here in Florida when we were refurnishing our second home in North Carolina. I took in the blueprints and the designer drew out possible furniture arrangments and did a marvelous job assisting us with our selections. What furniture should I put / where do I put it in this room?

The first thing that strikes me is that your curtain rod is too short which is why you have to push the curtains to the side which kills the vibe in this room. Get longer rods and linen-type curtains that are fairly similar to the wall color which will give the room warmth without looking busy. Please make sure that your area rug is as large as possible because that will make this room look fabulous. Little bitty rugs do not. I would choose an Oriental rug in warm colors because it will hide little accidents, at least until you can address them. I would definitely get a sofa, so great for cuddling with your husband and kids. I would place it in front of the window for good lighting for reading but also because it gives you the best sight lines into other areas of your home. Instead of a coffee table consider a large ottoman with a lid so that you have plenty of storage space. Please don't buy a brown or black leather couch. They look dated and are so difficult to decorate around. Try beige or caramel, with two chairs in contrasting colors, perhaps a nice blue or green, colors that will be in the carpet hopefully. You can also use the carpet colors to choose pillows for your soft furniture. Find some nice pictures to put on the walls, a large green plant, a bookcase or two (books are a must in a room) and side tables for lamps. By now your room will look gorgeous and be pretty well furnished and, most important of all, will be comfortable and fun to be in.

Solid gives you more decor options. You can always go into pattern with your accessories, rug, and wall decor, and it's cheaper to change than furniture. For ideas, put in top search box: dark gray couch in photos. Also, think of the balance in your room - how many dark color pieces do you have? How many light color pieces? How many medium color pieces? I get very little natural light in my living room, so I like mostly light colors there. I have an eclectic decor, and I have a lot of different colors in my accessories - that's where you can go nuts! What is your style? Put in top search box: transitional, casual, rustic, eclectic, etc.

What size area rug and where should it be placed?

Get some blue painters tape and tape the area you want the rug to cover then measure it. Or post it here for suggestions. Ideally it would be 2 feet wider than you sofa then measure how far past the coffee table you would want it

Oops, when you said "this living room furniture" I foolishly didn't even consider the room because I wasn't thinking it was necessarily going in the room you pictured. I just looked again at the floor and I agree with chickadee that your rug should probably be solid or "solid-ish."

I would go with a solid cream color that is in the background of the side chairs. You have enough color and pattern and I think it would be restful. One with a yummy pile would look nice or a flokati type would be gorgeous. It shouldn't be hard to find one.

Thanks so much everybody! FWIW it will be in a different room, but one that is essentially the same as this one (diff condo but of the same 1960s construction w/square parquet).
