Repairing broken window seals

Has anyone heard of a company called Window Savers? They claim they can repair broken seals on windows. I am skeptical. We have 18 year old Hurd windows, large fixed panes of glass with a southern exposure. Two of the highest ones are randomly showing some condensation. While I know replacement will be pricey, I'm wondering if anyone has heard of a repair technique. Or are we being scammed? Thanks!

Some people swear by it, others not so much. I fall into the not so much category as it really a crap shoot if it will work and hold up well.

It's a bandaid on a bigger issue and it will keep coming back, waste of time and money. Fix it right and replace the glass.

The condition of the two existing skylights as described should be replaced entirely and can be done now. Check out Velux Brand at your local building store or online at www.velux.com No doubt a professional installation is an important requirement as we are dealing with proper flashing to prevent any water infilration through the years ahead. Depending on the new model you choose, the installation of the two could run 500 to 750 each. As a last resort, the failed glass cartridges, if still available, can be replaced at a lower amount. I would look locally for a Glazier who has a good reputation and ask if he would measure and install the new glass. This way once he has the glass he can probably reglaze them right on site one at a time so the most you would not have a sash maybe an hour or so.

Andersen uses Cardinal's stainless spacer in all of their windows that are actually produced by Andersen. While the 100 series was initially introduced using a different IG system, the entire line was converted to Cardinal a year or two ago. However, the profile doesn't look right (to me) for a 100 series, and I have posted a 100 series casement handle for comparison to the last picture. Also, if it's an Andersen, it will have info logo'd on a corner of the glass. If there is no logo, it isn't Andersen. That spacer should be a warranty issue for somebody, but if there is no manufacturer info anywhere on the windows then you are out of luck unfortunately. Do you have any tempered glass windows in your home? It's possible that whomever made the windows also fabricated their own IG units and in that case they may have tempered their own glass. IF you have tempered glass in any of your windows, look at the tempered logo for "SGCC" with a four digit number after the letters. Get those four numbers and you can find out who tempered the glass - which MAY lead to the window manufacturer. Long shot, but who knows?

Thanks eastbay. No luck on the spacer bar between the glass. just a black rubber basket. I also looked at the windows and discovered that they are made by Windsor. However, each of those windows has Windsor stamped on the glass with no reference to Guardian. My patio door is the exception.... no reference to Windsor whatsoever. Already checked with the builder and they "can't remember". Lots of help there. So I have to solve this one myself.

Not sure I would replace a piece of glass in an 18 year old Hurd window though FT?

I agree that the technology is a bit unproven to be claiming that it is a one stop fix.

Curious why you wouldn't replace the thermal pane, WonW? The windows have been fine except for the random condensation...

You cannot just replace one pane of glass, the entire IGU needs to be replaced. My comment as to whether I would not be sure about replacing an IGU in an 18 year old Hurd has to do with what I usually see as the observed condition of 18 year old Hurds.

If the windows are otherwise in good shape, replace the IGU.

You are certainly in the minority though with having 18 year old clad wood windows being in good shape.

Props to you for obviously maintaining them if that is the case.

Thanks, WonW, but I can't take credit. They're pretty solid from what I can see. We replaced our siding last year and found many of the edge flanges cracked, so our contractor replaced all of them. I am really hoping these windows hold up a while longer...like until I've sold this house at some indeterminate future date. :)

Keep them well caulked and painted and you should be fine.

Keep the bushes cut back from in front of them as well.

If they haven't failed yet, they are probably very solid and should last a good long while.

Windows, poorly engineered units, usually fail in the first 7-10 years.

Repairing blown window seals is great,,,,if you are the guy that charges 100's of dollars to do it.
It will not work, the seal material that is bonded to the glass is not bonded anymore. nothing will fix that.
