Marvin Infinity Structural Test Numbers

I contacted Marvin regarding their structural test numbers and received a reply with two reports (one for a casement window and one for a triple sash glider). I've attached the summary for both in a JPEG.

My question is in regard to the air infiltration numbers (.08 and .01). It was my understanding that this was one of the infinity's weaker points and that they were closer to the .30 mark. Am I missing something with these numbers? Or am I simply reading them incorrectly?

I appreciate any help in the matter.

It is impossible to view the details on that image. Perhaps you can attach an un-resized variant.

The casement is always going to be an air tight operator so there is no surprise there.

The number out of the triple glider is very good if that is the case but with all triple gliders, the number will be a bit artificially depressed as a result of the size of the unit.

Air infiltration numbers are expressed as a air leakage/per square foot.

So...if you have a very large unit, the relatively high amount of air leakage will appear as a fairly small number.

Like I said, I can't read that report image and this somewhat artificially low numbers on sliders is nothing Marvin specific.

What operators are you considering for your home?

As windows on washington said, a casement is NOT a true measure of air leakage since its almost a fixed unit.
The slider is very large and not the size a company would use for structural testing. The best measure for air leakage is a double hung. The standard size for a double hung that is tested is usually 36x63 or somewhere close.
The Infinity double hung as a very high air leakage rate.

The Marvin and Integrity dealer I saw told me by name who the Infinity dealer was. This salesman was upfront about not having the Infinity brand. I would have been very irritated if I had been interested in the Infinity windows and had gone to the Marvin dealer expecting to see them, only to have the salespeople be less than upfront about 1. whether they carried them or 2. who did carry them, as seemed to happen with the posters above in the thread. Marvin is treating their Infinity line like a totally different line of window, so having them under the "Marvin" brand and showing them on the same website as the other two Marvin windows is confusing. Hey - I won't even go into how their website moves you from one brand of window to another without you being aware that you had made that selection! It makes me understand better why Sunrise would keep Restorations and Vanguard window lines separate from each other and from their other lines.

Sheilam, I know this is an older thread but I'm hoping you'll still see my post. Wanted to thank you for posting these pics of your beautiful windows! We have been struggling (for years!!) with what replacement windows we should buy and are strongly considering the Integrity line. I have a few questions/comments. First, because of other members' comments, just wanted to mention that although I like the look of Infinity windows, they are strictly replacement inserts and from what I've seen in the showroom, I would lose a LOT of glass with that window...a major concern for me since I'm used to our old anderson narrowlines. They are also more expensive. Also, Integrity all altrex and wood/ultrex are not exactly identical on the outside. The all ultrex lack the little ledge of material where the glass meets the stiles and rails that add depth and that would make SDL possible. Glass is kind of flush with the all ultrex. This doesn't bother me, just a clarification, in case it might help others. My questions: Did you do full rip outs or insert installation? Did you find a big difference in price between the all ultrex and wood ultrex? We've been considering doing the same thing you did but haven't priced them out yet to see if we would really save. For your wood/ultrex windows, did they do a factory paint job on them or did you paint them? Interestingly, except for the fact that you can only get between the glass grids with them, I actually prefer the "ugly" all ultrex windows....they are nice and narrow and simple. The wood ones have the top rail that juts out instead of any kind of lift hardware and a larger "thing" across the bottom. But I don't mean to dis your windows at ALL. I think they look fabulous and I will probably end up with mostly wood/ultrex, as a couple of my windows are kind of obvious, featured ones on the interior that need grids. One big triple in front and a big double in back. Thanks again, your windows look great and your pics are so helpful!

The Starmark should be the pretty clear winner as performance goes both thermally and structurally once you have all of those numbers aggregated. The Infinity is a nice, well built unit, as well, just not in the same space efficiency wise, although there could be other options that could point that direction for you like a stainable or other color painted interior. Not familiar with Vistamark. Milgard is decent, it fares well against the many less than stellar units offered on the West coast. Not quite as well IMO when going against some of the cold-weather-born unit in the East and Midwest. As far as the certifications, as mentioned on the other site they are nice to have, but I wouldn't get hung up on them. Installation Masters specifically is more weighted toward new construction installation. In remodeling work, there are so many different circumstances to deal with that experience is what makes the biggest difference. The history, general reputation (reviews etc), association with a quality manufacturer/product on a direct basis should all give a good indication of the quality to expect.

Well unfortunately there is more to making this work than merely just turning off zones. Carrier knows this which is why you have what you have. It's designed for less technical problems on the dealer end. Zone systems are a labor killer and as such you get what you pay for and in some cases of proprietary systems such as these what you pay for is mostly cumbersome nonsense that really doesn't work. Because infinity system is mostly a communicating type technology I doubt you would be able to get a new zone system to work with the system. Carrier knows that as well. AFAIK, the upper tier of any manufacturing brand is going to have these kinds of stipulations. Which is unfortunate. Things appear to be changing with Goodman manufactured brands, but I think it's still to early yet for me to say much more than that. Bosch brand is another that alleviate the communicating aspect. These 'communicate' in an entirely different fashion outside the control of the thermostat. I service the Katy, Texas area.

...and that is not even a operating casement, it is a FIXED casement which is essentially a picture window. It had BETTER have a great AI rating, lol... The guys above addressed the slider as well. For comparison purposes and because they are the most common by a large margin, double hungs ratings are most commonly cited and is the reason for the discrepancy between what you hear and see... although even with DH's, you have to look at the size of the window to make sure it is an apples to apples comparison. My guess is that if you simply contacted Marvin and asked for the structural reports in regards to air leakage, they just pulled up the best ones that they have and sent them over.

Thank you for all your responses. Very interesting how they attempt to improve their numbers. The triple slider was very large at 115x48".

I did solicit the double-hung numbers and it looks like it tested out at .16, though it was for a 40x86" unit.

WoW - regarding the operators, I hadn't given it any thought. Any recommendations?

Double hungs and Casements will be tighter by design as compared to sliders and larger sliders.

That is a large for a tested unit on the DH as well.

It is somewhat of an accepted industry standard to keep the unit size in the 100 - 105 united inch (width + height).
