Fiberglass Entry Door - which?
Comments (5)I'm curious, what do you base your opinion on millworkman? Do you know specifics about the Aurora door line that deter you or is it the general Jeldwen name (which I do know, has a bad rep)? Reason I ask is, while we're not yet to the point of picking an entry, I know the Aurora line is one of the only ones I've found that has a speakeasy option. My husband loves this look and I know he's going to lean towards a door that can have one. I need some pretty specific ammo going into the conversation, besides just "jeldwen sucks" hehe. To the op, I'd have a look at Thermatru as well....See MoreSW-facing front door in wood with no overhang in Cleveland, bad?
Comments (19)I don't know about your climate but my parents have a cape cod style house with no front porch and a wood door with sidelights and it is going strong after many years. If you want a saltbox style house, a porch wouldn't fit very well I wouldn't think. I was also thinking you could recess the door a bit and panel the sides of the recess (you see this a lot with Georgians) but I was thinking you wanted a georgian style house not a Saltbox style one . . . Are you doing brick or siding? If you are doing brick, you could recess the door a bit into your anteroom (this could leave an area for closets on either side which you could make attractive - I'll try to find a picture), but you would lose some of the focus of the spiderweb look. I think this other look is equally attractive and can be really beautiful but it may not be what you are looking for. It would protect the door more though!...See MoreSteel vs. Fiberglass Doors
Comments (55)Our house was built in 2001. We have a double front door and garage entry door, both fiberglass by Thermatru. The front door with full lite glass has had serious warping. The top and bottom both twist in. This is in a covered area facing East. The garage entry is fine, but the seal went out in the 1/2 glass. I sent claim to thermatru direct. Via email I was able to get replacement. But not what I wanted. They were willing to send me one new door slab and 3 new pieces of glass since our style was discontinued. That would have been a nightmare trying to get the new one to match both inside and outside with paint and stain. We compromised with 2 new front slabs and 1 new glass. They sent it immediately. We are just getting around to replacing with spring weather. I’m exasperated and haven’t even started. Seeing what they sent, it is going to be a huge hassle to change out the glass AND strip and repaint the surrounds, etc that didn’t get replaced. Now looking at steel doors from Menards, Mastercraft. I see the good and bad reviews, but honestly I’d be happy if that lasted 2/3 the time these did as these fiberglass doors are crap. I want durable fade free doors. I did buy a Home Depot door for garage to house, with glass, not fire rated, my concern in that. Our installer said it was the easiest door he’s ever put in and to this day it opens and closes perfectly. On at least its 5th year. Didn’t spend more than $500 for it....See Moreunique or custom entry door options
Comments (4)All the pro-via options have the same panel style and same glass options as all the big-box brands. I'm not seeing anything more interesting than standard 6-panel doors and art-glass on their website. And they only have like 2 glass options for a half-circle transom. Not much to go on here. But THIS is interesting: http://www.jeld-wen.com/catalog/exterior-doors/custom/fiberglass/glass-panel Look at the A252 or A250 in the Jeld-Wen Aurora Custom Fiberglass line. I don't see any other manufacturer making interesting unique doors like that (outside of custom wood). The only reason I'm not jumping the gun on it is because my preferred contractor said anything Jeld-Wen is junk. But I wonder if this aurora custom line would be as good as the signet or not? It might be only the lower-end Jeld-Wen lines that are or lesser quality. The other thing I found was Albany Door Company, Inc. Just look at the line-up of door styles, there's about 4x as many options as ProVia http://www.albanydoor.com/styles.php And these glass options are worlds above the stock provia options (which all remind me of menards light fixtures) http://www.albanydoor.com/gallery-glass-examples.php Anyone know if albany windows are any good in terms of quality? If I'm going to spend 5K on a new door, I want something that looks unique and interesting and performs well. Unless I'm missing something on the provia website, it just seems to be a rather banal selection of panel styles and glass options. But provia seems hands-down the best performing/quality door around. I'm willing to settle for 2nd best quality if it looks loads better. But I don't want a piece of big-box crap either....See Morepcweary
