Gifts from my partner to my kids - does my ex need to approve?

The situation: my partner/significant other (we're not married, yet, and are avoiding using the word "stepfather" with my kids) went through his old baseball cards that he collected as a child and gave about 20 of them as a Christmas gift last year to my crazy-about-baseball younger son. These cards lay in a box in my son's room until he recently got the idea of finding out how much they were worth. He's researched this carefully and it turns out that all together they're worth over $1000. This of course has blown my son away; he reveres them and has carefully put them into protective cases and locked them in the safe.

The issue: my ex-husband is jealous of my partner's relationship with my sons (ages 15 and 13). He's asked me if I believe he has the right to know if my partner gives my sons a gift that's worth over $1000. My response: I don't think it's appropriate to have my partner clear ANY gifts to the boys with my ex.

The question: how do you experienced stepparents deal with this?
