I need HELP: window grilles or not?

We have this 1961 house. I want to say it's sort of Colonial, but it really has no style. I took off the shutters because bats like to hide behind them. Anyway, I was thinking of putting grilles in just the front. We are getting new Marvin Integrity windows throughout the whole house. We are also turning our 3 season porch into a 4 season porch, with big windows all around (we love our back yard). We do have a nice lot with ravine and a view. So, I was thinking just grilles in front of the house to jazz it up a bit but no grilles in back. One problem is that the living room has windows in back as well as front. Is that going to look really weird? I don't want to have to obstruct the back view too much. Plus if I put grilles in the back of those windows, I will have to do every window in the house, which I might do. How about the back porch? Anyone here--have you "grilled" your porch? I would rather feel like I'm sitting outside and have no grilles. I will post a pic as soon as I can figure out how. I'm new! Thank you for any help!

Welcome to the home forum! Your house is precious and those front windows are screaming for some snazzy grilles to add character and charm!! Luckily, according to the Marvin website, you have plenty of options.

Your home would look gorgeous with the "Cottage T", "Checkrail", or "Checkrail T" grille pattern on the front windows. In addition, if you really want increase your wow factor, consider adding casings and subsills to those front windows. The "Potter" or "Brick Mould" casing with the A217 subsill would compliment your home beautifully.

IMHO, I don't think it would look "weird" to have grilles in the front windows of the LR and not on the others, but weird is usually in the eye of the beholder, so go with what makes you feel best. After all, you're going to be the one sitting in your living room. It needs to work for YOU.

As for the porch view that you would like to keep uninterrupted, you could opt for no grilles, OR you could choose a pattern that offers a little interest, with maximum "viewing" potential. Perhaps the "Cottage A" pattern?

You didn't mention cost being a deciding factor, so I didn't take it into consideration when making suggestions. I hope this helps! Be sure and post an "after" picture. I'd love to see how it turns out.

In my city grills are not permitted on residential windows. I have no doubt your grills would have architectural integrity but most people here would stick on grills just for security reasons and they would use your standard variety security grills that are so ugly. There was one house on the next block, all modest homes, that put the grills on all the windows including the front windows. Suddenly it made the whole block look like there was a crime problem in the neighborhood, and there isn't. The crappy pink stucco job didn't help that house either! Anyway, the city made them remove the grills.

Tracie Your concerns regarding balance are valid. In order to address them there are a number of issues: What are the other sizes of windows on this side of the house? What is the configuration of the windows? What type of replacement windows are you using - are they close to the original design, material? For me the exterior should be the first consideration that drives the decision, the interior 2nd. Looking at windows of homes IRL is also helpful. For example my home has 6/1 configuration windows are roughly 30" wide by 53" long - putting a huge window would throw the entire exterior balance off - additionally replacing the 80 yr old windows with vinyl would total detract from the exterior Taking a picture of the exterior of your home is beneficial in determining what will work.

Thats is the balance assembly and it can be replaced. Easiest way to do so would be if you can identify the model of window and proceed accordingly.

You first choice is the best. This house has six over one in all of the double hung window, but not for the casements. It looks right. But here is an example of no grids on the lower level of the picture windows. Interesting!

I got Superior Ultima vinyl windows with the v-groove grids. They are actually edged into the glass. The glass is 3/16" thick with the v-groove in it. They really keep the noise out. I love them.
