Help with curtains/window size/how many grilles?

I need some help with a balance question. I would like to have room for my curtains to frame but not cover a window I am replacing, so I am considering reducing the width of the window. Currently I have only 12.5" from the edge of this window to the adjacent wall, which also has a door 6" in. I do not feel this is enough room for the curtains. How much wall space do I need to have for this? 18, 21, 24"?

The window is currently 117" so it's pretty big, but it's a nice feature so I don't want to shrink it TOO much. Unfortunately it's not an option to reframe the wall to scoot the window down.

Also, I am going with a triple double hung unit. Say I cut this window down to 105" or so - would 6 over 6 grilles be too busy looking? Each window would then be 35" wide.
