Tree Trunk Cutting Board

I posted this on Trash to Treasure but then noticed this forum and thought you might be able to give me advice.

I live in an area where many log cabins are built. I've seen wide logs that could be cut to the proper height that I would like to transform into a table with a cutting board on top. I had seen one like this that a friend had purchased at a furniture store.

Does anyone know how I would do this? Do I need to sand it down completely? What sealer would I use on the sides and on the top?
