So I took your idea Ceph and talked to the boys about video games today. Told them no gaming before 9am....and it can only start at 9am IF they have eaten breakfast, brushed their teeth, and gotton dressed. My son looked at me and said "where in the world did you get that idea?"

I thought that was pretty funny!

Anyways, they both took it well. I am excited!

Haha! That's terrific!
I hope this gives you kids who sleep later and are in better moods in the morning (like it did for us).

I'm totally impressed that there were no tears involved (there were for us).

Is there any way that you could work your gardening into doing some gardening on school grounds. I know from experience at our school that the cleaner and nicer the school is the less trash and vandelism. I would look into maybe doing either container gardening or finding an area to spruce up. I am hoping to do more of this this summer at our school. Stacie

Gaaaaa! How frustrating! Did DH do all his squawking in front of SS? It's OK for his to disagree with how you dealt with it, but undermining you in front of SS is a problem. By the sounds of it, you doled out a consequence to SS for not listening to an adult and told him to accept the consequences without a fuss. But DH interprets this as you mistreating SS and telling him not to tell. IMO, at the moment, this is just a communication breakdown, but if SS is clever, he may be able to exploit it into MUCH more. So deal with it ASAP!! Anyhow, we have a rule that there are no video games until 10am, and that you have to be dressed, breakfast eaten, bed made, teeth brushed and ready to get on with the day. There was a good deal of resistance to this rule at first, but he seems to like it now... We brought it in when my SS was 9 because he was dragging himself out of bed at 5am, bleary eyed at exhausted to play video games. Then when we got up, he'd been plugged in to the game for a few hours already and was a huge grouch. He'd throw a tantrum when asked to eat breakfast or get dressed. It was a mess. But now he sleeps until around 8, watches cartoons in his jammies for awhile, eats breakfast, brushes his teeth and washes his face, makes his bed, gets dressed and then plays some games until lunchtime. No fuss, no tantrums. It's fabulous. Maybe that would work for you?

WHile I understand the frustration of you pitted against the DH, I think you made it worse with this "I looked at him and told him he was creating a cry baby by giving into it and I walked away". I'm really hoping SS did not hear/see that and as at a table setting I'm not sure how it could have been very private between you and DH. I'm guessing the other adult friends witnessed this also. I doubt DH or child are non too happy with the incident. You called them both out for all to see. I'm not saying I think you're wrong to want backup and consistent 'rules', punishment ect, but I'm thinking making an issue over the iphone and vid games on it in a setting were games were part of the reason there was your wrong step. Ignoring kid's fit, fine. Quietly pointing out to kid his behavior was silly and all the others were having fun, fine. But putting DH in spotlight and calling kid crybaby in front of all, not so fine. If I read this wrong, please forgive me, I know it's hard to tell a whole story in these small spaces, I'm just going on what and how you actually told us here. I think there are two problems now. 1. Dh is not consistent with SS and sending kid double messages which are 'no', and also 'oh, okay, if you whine about it'...and 2. you put them both in bad light in front of others and DH came out defending son. No win situation. It may have been better to ignore SS fit, and once DH did not by giving kid iphone, it would likely have been better to deal with DH at home in private away from friends and SS. Like being between a rock and a hard spot. There was really nothing you could do, but you ended up letting SS play Dh against you. Yet another reason it likely should have been dealt with later, kid just learned he can win with dad against you by even more crying and whining. Good for him, bad for you. I think it's good long talk time with DH. He's not helping SS and you're ending up being the bad guy.

Two days in and I am happy to report that both my son and ss have survived! They have eaten breakfast each day and brushed their teeth and gotton dressed. All by 9am!

And I have noticed that they are sleeping better because they are not dragging themselves out of bed at 7am to start gaming!

Today they actually did not even get on video games till after lunch because we spent the morning walking the dog and going to the park.

Isn't the "not dragging themselves out of bed at an ungodly hour to play video games" thing fabulous?

Oh yes, I remember those days well lol. Now we have to require the cell phones be handed over at 10pm.

I had no issue with cell phone or videogames, DD didn't care about those, but I had a major issue with Internet and overall computer (computer games or what not).

DD spent enormous amount of time on the Internet/computer (she still spends a lot of time on computer). She was required to turn off computer at 10PM. She typed so loud that I could not sleep next door.

I became so paranoid wiht it that once I yelled "stop typing i can't sleep!!!" In a mean time it turns out DD was in a bathroom getting ready for bed and computer was off. LOL I heard so much of her computer that it was in my ears even when it was off!!! LOL

oh how that would be...my SS6 will wake up on a Saturday at 7AM, will come in our room "daddy can I play vieo games" no i did not spell that worng, that is how he says it. And dad will give in and let him play for HOURS before breakfast, before anything, then the kid is GRUMPY all day long!
