Cold Frame Experiment
Comments (2)I made a cold frame out of straw bales and a pane of aquarium glass; planted kale seeds in November (later than I would have liked), and they are doing well now, but not growing too fast at this point. Right now it probably is too cold to start seeds outdoors, unless you put the hoop house *over* the cold frame, then it just might work! At the verly least they will have a good headstart for spring. As far as starting seeds and transplanting, it seems like the transition would be very stressful for the seedlings. For lots of information and inspiration on this subject, I'd recommend "Four Season Harvest" by Eliot Coleman....See MoreMarvin casement windows & window treatments
Comments (1)I purchased the Marvin Utimate casements too and finding it difficult to find window treatments that fit inside these windows.. The grooves inside for their integrated shades prevents mounting of conventional window treatments using an inside mount. I also purchase a couple of Marvin Ultimates with the retractable screen and there does seem to be a Marvin solution for an integrated shade with it either. Anyone have a suggestion on this? I figured it out!. You do an inside mount on 1" part of the surrounding window inner surface.. It might leave a little sticking out depending on the 1" depth mini bind or cellular shade, but it is doable....See MoreMarvin Infinity Windows/Sliding Door
Comments (5)corten, what are your priorities in choosing a window? I do like the Integrity option that WoW mentioned above, however I'd qualify that recommendation by saying that is IF you value a wood interior over high performance. Most wood and fiberglass windows (with the exception of some Canadian brands) are a bit lacking in performance, particularly air leakage. If the appearance of vinyl is acceptable to you, a premium vinyl product will likely offer the best thermal and structural performance that you can find, and do so at a lower price point comparatively. Below is an actual testimonial from a client of ours, I've only obscured the brand of the window that she chose so that this does not read like a commercial: "In replacing my windows, I first tried Marvin Infinity fiberglass double hung windows in one room. I hated them from the first night because the air infiltration was very high, the top pane would drop slightly letting more cold air in, and the fiberglass conducted the outside cold. I replaced the Marvins within a few months with the ****single hung windows, mainly because of the low air infiltration ratings, and because it was the only high quality single hung in the area with the .01% air infiltration rating. After living with the **** over the winter, I was pleased enough that I replaced the rest of the windows with **** single hung. I have been very pleased. Customer Service after installation also has been very good" Again, the Integrity and to some extent Infinity are good windows, just make sure that they fit your goals for the project, which to some degree is form over function... Just some food for thought....See MoreAny experience with the Marvin integrated window and door sensors?
Comments (4)We looked at this option as well. It appears that with Marvin, they only tell you whether or not the door is locked. The Pella system tells the alarm if the door or window is actually open....See MoreHU-33218952
