The Other Side

I did not want to hijak someone else's post so here is my response to your post about co-parenting.

In regards to your question about why I warmed up to the man who my mom cheated on my stepdad who raised me with.....I guess he just grew on me. I lived with him and he was very kind to me and put up with a lot from me. I was just plain ignorant to him because of the situation. But, he was still always there for me and gave me excellent advice as I got older. He was always willing to take me to friends houses or pick them up when my mom was not. When my mom was at her wits end with me I could hear her yelling about me in her bedroom to him and I could hear him sticking up for me. No matter how much crap I gave him he was still always there for me. So, I grew to appreciate him. And I realize that everyone makes mistakes. It was more my moms fault for cheating than it was his fault for being the other man. Yes, he should have not gone for a married woman but he was single and she was the one who let things progress even though she was married.

As I became a stepparent myself we would joke about the fact that he too married into a ready made family, though he never had any kids of his own.

As for your comment on waiting till kids grow up for parents to re-marry:

I do see that a lot of posters on here have said that if they did it all over again they would not marry when the kids were still at home. I just have a different perspective. I am quite happy with the decision I made, and my bioson is too. (I discussed the possibility of marriage and living with dh and skids with my son before my dh and I became engaged-my son really liked my dh and skids and was all for marriage and living together) He adores my dh and his biofather. My dh and my ex get along, so that may have something to do with it. My dh has taken my son out by himself and my son looks forward to those "boys days out". At home my son enjoys talking to and playing with my dh. They have become very close. It is cute to see my son complain that he misses my dh when my dh works overtime.

I also have a friend who was divorced with 2 kids and remarried about 8 years ago. Her kids were 2 and 3 at the time and are now 10 and 11. They love their stepfather and he treats them wonderfully. So, sometimes re-marriage can be a wonderful thing!

I do however understand that there are some men (and women) out there that do make stepkids miserable. I have seen many instances where the stepparent (especially stepfathers since most times kids live with their moms after a divorce) treats the kid unfairly and nitpicks them to no end. In kids I work with I have also seen abusive stepparents. Maybe my situation is unique, but I do know that there are successful blended families out there and I just wanted to let the poster know that.
