Repairing burnt spot on IKEA bed (pics)

I also posted this in the furniture forum, but I think it's more suited for this one.

Several weeks ago, we had a halogen desk lamp accidentally lay on top of an IKEA bed (headboard) and burnt a spot about the size of two quarters. The bed is less than 2-years old and I was hoping for some suggestions to repair the spot. I thought about wood filler, but wanted to know if there were any better options before I gave it a go. Thanks!

probably the best approach is a two-part polyester filler (Bondo or Minwax High Performance Wood Filler). Mask off the area, apply filler, sand to level, add some grain lines by scoring with a knife. Then get some flat-black lacquer and lightly apply a few coats, blending in to the area.

I agree with the above post. A two part epoxy type filler will be much more durable and fill in larger areas.

It looks like the veneer is peeling up. You might want to glue this part back down first. Use painters tape to keep it down while the glue dries.

Then I would put some finishing nails or brads into the dent. This will help anchor the filler. Make sure the nails are below the highest point of the bed and will not show once it is sanded.

Make sure you tape off the area around the dent. You will need to sand down the filler and you do not want to damage any other areas with the sand paper.

Good luck, this is a fairly easy fix! It will not look perfect but it shouldn't be noticeable unless you point it out.

This stuff smells terrible so I would do it outside or at least mix it outside.

I have a couple of narrow areas like this in my yard, although I don't view them they way you do this one, and my policy is that I want it to be pleasant to get IN there because I have to tend them no matter what they are - weed, sweep, rake, what have you. (Most recently, what I have is to repair some digging that a skunk or something is doing to try to get under the adjacent garage). So my priority would be an area of paving - I would say large slabs so there are fewer cracks to catch weed seeds, and if you want it to be really easy to lay, make it rubber - I get mine at Canadian Tire, Home Depot has something similar for patios, but maybe someone else would sell some form of it as garage flooring. If you do pavers, it would be worth doing an attractive pattern since you look down on the area. You could either run this surface the perimeter of the area, if you want it to be a full planting most of the year that you just go in to clean up in fall, or you could make the central area a hard surface, bordered with plantings, and maybe a central container or other focal point. The perimeter idea might work better, because plants will grow best in the centre of this area where they are not getting light from only one side or a strange angle. To get the best of both options, you might do just a horseshoe shaped area of plants with paving both at the perimeter and up the centre. You can have some design fun here since the area is isolated and does not have to "go" with the rest of your yard. It would also lend itself to a pond, but that is so not my thing that I couldn't tell you a thing about how to do it. Or a Japanse zen garden... and ditto on that. Karin L

My broyhill was not slipcovered. It was a reclining sofa, ottoman and oversized chair set. Within three years, the fabric looked horrible and there were rips where the attached back cushions had separated from the frame on the sofa. If even a little water was spilled on the sofa, it showed a water spot ring that was impossible to remove without steam cleaning the entire sofa. The oversized chair also developed a rip/tear on the seat cushion that was not repairable. This chair was usually only used by occasional guests. We lived on the sofa (and still do)so I really expected the chair to wear better as well. Overall I paid three times more for the Broyhill furniture and it looked awful much sooner. I do occasionally miss the reclining option of the sofa, but not enough to offset the cost and appearance differences. I honestly think that any slipcovered piece by any manufacturer would give you the same benefits that I love about my Ektorp pieces. It is the slipcovers that make all the difference in my opinion. However, Ikea was able to give me the option of having all of the slipcovered pieces at a much lower cost and replacement slipcovers are very reasonable as well. I have an extra set of white slipcovers for all three pieces, just "in case", but I can't see the need to open those packages for a very long time. I think my original white covers will easily last as long as I keep the furniture. If I knew how well the slipcovers would come clean, I would have purchased another set of more "wild" pattern for an occasional change instead.

This is funny you posted this, because I was wondering today if an ikea bed would work in the guest room. I think I decided against it for now. I dont know anything about MASH but I did consider their beds before I bought mine from dwr. I like that bed in your photo. Where I live, there are scorpions and centipedes and I wanted a bed with little surface area touching the ground. I have the dwr modern bed in walnut and really like it. I got it at their semiannual sale for 15% plus free in home delivery. I think they have a couple storage options also. Thanks for the great info. Someone else in another forum recommended a water based filler such as Elmer's/Minwax as being easier to smooth, clean-up and possibly less damaging to the surrounding wood. I'm pretty much limited to what the big box stores carry around here...Elmer's, Mixwax & DAP plastic wood. Any suggestions on what would be best? I'll repost pictures of my progress as it happens! :-) Also, I need to pick up painters tape and sandpaper. any suggestions on grit #?

You can find Bondo at nearly any auto parts store or big stores like Walmart. A water-based filler would work, but it tends to be a bit more friable (likely to crumble if bumped hard, particularly on a large spot like this.

Bondo and Minwax 2-part filler tend to sand fairly easily. Epoxy stick, such as QuikWood, tend to be harder and more work to sand.

You will probably want to end up with P400 sandpaper. Start of with something coarser, as low as 80 grit to start, just watch the edges. Go 80-120-180-320 or 400. Part of the decision is how skilled you are in getting a fairly smooth start. You might also need a couple of layers if you don't get filled to level on the first try.

And, yes, I missed it in the photos. Glue and tape the loose veneer before starting.

Bondo is very smelly/toxic, be sure to do it outside.
