Opinions on heavy drapery ratios...

I would like to order velvet drapes for a few 70" windows. I'm eyeing these: Overstock Velvet Drapes.

Does the guideline of 2x window width apply to heavier drapery fabrics like velvet? That's a lot of bulk to accomodate when the curtains are open, which they will be -- most of the time.

I usually place the rod brackets far enough out from the window that the opened panel bulk can hang without blocking the window (e.g. inner curtain edge just at, or barely past, outer window edge). Since the velvet is bulky, let's say I place the brackets 18" (just throwing something out there) from the window edge to accomodate the space they will take when opened. (18*2)+(70*2) = 176. Almost 15 feet of fabric?! That's a lot of velvety mass! That won't look silly?

I don't follow your arithmetic. You have two windows - I'm assuming they're next to each other. Each window is 70" wide. The curtains are 96" wide. If two panels will be opened to a side, that gives you 26" of drape on one side beyond the window, with the panel across the window. The question is how much stacking space does the 96" curtain require? I'd figure 3/4" to 1" per pleat. My guess is something between 20" and 24", or about the amount of drape beyond the window.

If you have a 72" window by itself, and the drapes are to cover the window, then you have 13" of drapes on either side of the window when closed and the stacking space when the drapes are opened is something between 10" and 12".

Gah, don't want to make a $600 math error. Typed out a longer response, lost it - so here's the short and sweet version. I'm basing this off the 106" below, doubled for the rule of thumb. Total 212" or 17.7 feet. Pretend the horiz. brown line is a rod, and the smaller vert. ones are brackets.

I'm just trying to figure out if I can accomodate about 3 yards of velvet on either side of the window, in the wall space I have. Figuring on your per pleat allowances - I'll have to do that still. "9 feet" just seems so bulky.

Your ratio sounds OK if you allow lots of room for the birds to roam and be able to run away from each other. It also depends on the breed and individual bird. You may find when the roos mature that they get along great, all three fight all the time, just scuffle occasionally or there may be one problem child. Be ready for anything and to have to make some tough, quick decisions. We currently have a flock of 37 chickens, three of which are roos: 1 Americaunas, 1 Millefleur/Frizzle mix banty and 1 Silkie. They get along fine with the Americaunas as Head Roo, he will chase the other two roos once in a while to maintain his status but no serious fights. I have had to get rid of a bad roo in the past, though. I feel that roos do serve a purpose beyond simple reproduction. They are also great watchdogs for the hens, providers, and complete the social structure. I watched my original roo, a Barred Rock, beat a Sharpshin hawk off of one of the banty hens one day. He was fine and she limped for a few days. I was about 15 feet away and it was over before I could move--he earned his keep that day! I've tried it both ways, and my hens are definetley happier and better off with roos than without. :)

Applying 20-3-12 and 0-20-0 provides exactly the same nutrient value as applying 20-23-12. The only difference is the amount of other "stuff" in the bag. "You'll need to research and learn more about the manufacturing and packaging of synthetic fertilizer products to understand their reasons for using a filler to complete the weight of the bag." It is entirely inaccurate to say that a bag of 46-0-0 has "filler." It is 100% urea. (NH2)2CO. Nitrogen weighs 14 and there are 2 of them, so 28. The whole molecule weighs 60. (28+4+12+16) The percentage of nitrogen by weight is therefore 28/60 = 46%. No "filler" there. Basically, the only "filler" used in most lawn fertilizers is binding agents that make some "slow release." All the other weight not listed in the N-P-K ratio is the other elements required to bind those nutrients into a solid. After all, Nitrogen is gas and would just float away on its own. It is a physical impossibility to apply 100-0-0 fertilize to a lawn.

Pretty well everything in composting has 'good ranges' and there are different opinions as to what these ranges are. I go with: C:N range 25:1 to 40:1 Moisture range 40% to 60% Oxygen not less than 5% (I think atmosphere is around 20%) If you are using HM (with no bedding) and leaves, I wouldn't use a lot of leaves but I'd make sure I mixed them real good. Leaves and grass I'd go 2:1 by volume as long as the leaves were finely shredded. Unshredded, I'd go more bags of leaves. Once again, mixing really helps. Some of the best stuff I've seen is that last cut of the grass in the fall with a carpet of leaves on top. That stuff gets chopped and mixed so well it's almost perfect. Add just a wee bit of moisture and boom, 150 in a day. I love those bags of fall leaves/grass. Lloyd

You know montesa, at this time, even with all the EPA restrictions and 2 cycle engines, I don't think smaller 2 strokes will ever be totally banned from new production. There is still too much of an advantage and power to weight ratio to warrant not to produce them in certain type of equipment. There are a few companies left ie Bombardier/Lear Jet, that have enough financial capabilities to stay ahead of the R&D in takes to keep the larger displacement engines running more efficiently and for the GREEN WIENERS, cleaner. I think if Toro/LawnBoy could have somehow redirected the intake/combustion, added fuel injection, manadated fully synthetic oil in their engines only, or added a catalytic convertor, they could have meet EPA regs. Did they want to spend the extra money to develop, would it make the every so light and easy to manuever mower more heavy and cumbersome? Probably some of the biggest reasons they chose not to. I'll buy and use 2 strokes as a first option as long as I can. If I ever have to resort to a 4cycle trimmer or chain saw, then I give up my power tools. They only engine I will want to drain a crankcase on will be larger mowers, cars, trucks, marine, etc. If this man can carry it, then in needs to be a 2 strokin' high revvin' long livin', 2 STROKE!!!

I just measured some drapes. They're heavy material, so they're the equivalent of velvet, in terms of mass. One drape covers 6', and the material is 17' wide (204"). It stacks in 22". Hope this helps.

I don't think you need 2x fullness for the heavier velvet fabric. Lighter fabric can look skimpy if the fullness is not there.

I'm looking a my 96" velvet panels as I write this, and because they are not lined they really don't take up much room when stacked, ~15". When closed, they cover an 8' window (hardly ever closed). They aren't very full when drawn, but they look fine when the fabric is evenly distributed. Which is another point: If the draperies are not pleated and not on a traverse rod, it takes a bit of fussing to get them to look right when drawn. If I were going to routinely close pleatless draperies, I would not want the extra fullness.
