Replacing Casement Windows

Hi all,

My home is approx 22 years old and currently has Crestline wood casement windows. They all have significant rot and need to be replaced. I have 8 total windows, 4 double panes, 4 single panes.

To this point I have received 2 quotes.

The first contractor quoted approx $12k for Jeld-Wen clad wood and $6200 for Alside vinyl casements.

The second contractor quoted $5500 for the Alside vinyls, but didn't give me an exact quote on the Pella that he offers.

I really like the look of real wood on the interior of the home, and while the Alside vinyl do offer different interior colors with "faux" wood, its still vinyl. From what I've seen and read, Alside makes a very good window, I'm just worried about the appearance.

I'm worried that if I go with the vinyl I'll be hurting the value of my home, by replacing it with a lower grade product, but at the same time don't want to invest money that I won't get a return on. My home is worth approx $150k.

What are your thoughts on Andersen clad/wood casements? Would these be less expensive than Jeld-Wen?

The problem is the Jeld Wen, Pella, Marvin, Anderson and Milgards of the world offer a million different varieties of windows. I'm sure each of them offer a product which is both more and less expensive than the other.

As opposed to shopping by brand, shop by materials used.

What type of wood do they use? Is the cladding roll formed or extruded. These are the elements that make for long lasting windows.

It sounds like you have what is called a twin casement window, One opens to the left and the other to the right. In window replacement terms it is considered (1) twin casement. The vertical piece you see in the center is removed, creating a complete opening. The new twin casement will fit right into the same opening. It's really not that hard to replace the operating mechanism. Pry up the bottom sash stop, over the operator, and it will expose the part to be replaced. The arm of the operator just clips to a bracket on the sash. Then replace the mechanism and replace the sash stop. Fifteen minutes....

Sophie, the OP didn't say why he wanted to install a room air conditioner, and I think it's a stretch to assume it's because his home HVAC system isn't doing its job. Not everyone has or wants central air conditioning. As it happens, for example, I have 2 rooms with air conditioners in my house. That's intentional. One gets used regularly, the other only a few times per year. This setup works for me. And if someone (say, a guest in my home) tried to tell me that I should upgrade my HVAC system because my room air conditioners didn't meet his standards, he probably wouldn't get invited back. For the record, I agree that a mini-split would do the OP well. One of my air conditioners is a mini-split, and I like it. But it was outrageously expensive. I bit the bullet because I needed an especially quiet system. I hope installers have come to their senses since I had mine installed, but at the time, the installation cost over $1000. I had other quotations in the $2000 range. From what I could tell, they wanted about the same fee as they charged for a central air conditioner. In many other places I know of where mini-splits are popular -- Asia, South America, the Middle East, even Puerto Rico -- getting one installed usually costs around $100-300. I don't know about the EU.

The issue may not be the cost of the windows as much as the difference in labor. Some companies advise simply removing the operating portion of the window (or the operating portion plus the divider or mullion) and installing a much smaller window in the remaining opening. The AWDI says the entire existing casement window should be removed and a new buck frame installed to hold the new vinyl replacement window. This may add $100-$200 labor cost to the project and may be the reason you see differences in your quotes.

Make the companies give you detailed quotes describing the method of installation and this will help you make your final decision.
