Did I kill my Japanese Maple Crimson Queen?!!!
Comments (6)I bought a healthy Crimson Queen Lace-leaf Japanese Maple 4 weeks ago. After about 2 weeks I noticed that the leaves started wilting/drying and curling. When I touched the leaves they just fall down. This tree gets a lot of direct strong sun for 4-5 hrs per day. The soil in my area is very clayish. I dug a little soil around the tree to see if tree is drowning or suffocating and I saw that there was pool of water around it. Looks like the soil in my area is not draining but retains all water. Would this property of soil drown the tree? Do I need to move it somewhere else. Is it enough if I remove the tree add a little soil under it to increase the height and replant it in same place ? I also tried to break some small branches and it looks like some are brittle and they easily snap. The bark looks green. Please advise on options. I don't want this beautiful tree to die. Is there a test to tell if it is alive....See MoreSo, if I were dumb enough to want to try J. Maples again???
Comments (4)Whaas, I have every kind of soil found in the midwest EXCEPT for a true histosol. The area I'm thinking of trying a couple has a rich sandy loam and is under the edge of the canopy of a large shagbark hickory and a large Kentucky coffee. One of my Cornus kousa is planted in this area, and the side facing the canopy of the trees was the only dogwood I had this year with blossoms not damaged by the April freeze incident. I didn't think of it until just now, but there won't be an allelopathy issue with the hickory, will there? I know they produce a bit of juglone, but I think its far, far less than their walnut cousins....See MoreI need to strip my kitchen table, can someone recommend a brand?
Comments (9)You really think the table top is pine veneer?? I don't think I've ever seen anything but solid pine. And if it were solid pine, I wouldn't hesitate to pull out my power sander and sand off the bad coat and however much of the scratches and dents you want. Stripper performance is greatly affected by temperature and humidity. When it is warm and/or dry, the solvent evaporates too quickly to get the finish removed, so it re-hardens. If it's cool and damp, you can probably remove a poorly applied clear finish with anything. If it's warm and/or dry, as it probably is almost anywhere right now, I've had the best luck with a brand called Dad's. Or cover the stripper with a sheet of plastic. Also, tackle the stripping as early in the morning as possible. It sounds like you want to match the color of the top to the legs. Waterlox is a nice product, but it is quite dark amber. Minwax Wipe-On Poly is quite a bit lighter, performs just as well, and is easy to apply. It's also much cheaper. Minwax Fast-Drying Poly is a little lighter still, and can be made into an easy-to-apply wiping varnish by adding thinner....See MoreStrip & re-stain OR Paint Maple End Tables?
Comments (2)Staining takes 5 times the effort of painting and looks twice as good. That is assuming you are experienced with both. If you arn't good at either,it still takes 5 times longer to stain but turns out twice as bad as if you had painted. Look at it like this. A newbe wants to join your little band that plays for fun at nurseing homes on Fridays. If he has a violin (stain) and a cow bell (paint) but doesn't know how to play either, you want the cow bell. On the other hand if he is very talented with both, the violin gets the nod....See Moredeedee-2008
