Moulding & Stair Tread Dilemma

logic

We are just about finished our staircase project...removed all carpet from the stairway..sanded and stained the treads (eastern white pine) and painted the risers white.

It looks great...except for two remaining issues. The first is that the bottom step curves around on both ends..and since it was apparently carpeted before the tile was installed in the foyer, there is a fairly large space between the bottom of the riser and the tile....too large to fill properly with grout or silicone. The question...what type of moulding could we use that can be easily bent to the curves?

Or, is there a better solution?

Second issue...the third step from the bottom has a defect; it appears as if a small narrow triangular portion of the edge of step is broken off...it is unfortunatly located toward the outer end of the tread, toward the spindles, and will not be covered by the soon to be installed runner. The tread can't be removed without major work, as it is attached from underneath and there is no access...which is why we did not just replace all of the treads with oak...very cost prohibitive because of the labor involved.

Any thoughts on how best to fix this? DH is thinking about buying an eastern white pine tread, staining it to match, and cutting off a piece the appropriate shape and size, and attaching to the existing step via dowels. Does this sound as if it would work? If not, any other ideas are more than welcome. :-)
