Design Around 9: Keeping the Golden Oak
Comments (139)Before/after videos online so I wouldn't have to post so many pictures. (First two of grandson, skip to videos 3 & 4) Https://vimeo.com/user12732009/videos 1. Experimented (Mar. 2013) inside one door; days later it passed scratchtest. Eight months later cabinets like new. I had all materials from previous project so cabinet project cost nothing. 2. Removed doors, drawers, knobs, very light sanding outsides only, very little ebony stain, one coat semi gloss poly clear coat. Took 4 days, 3. Bought and stained oak molding for soffet, light oak, then ebony; perfect match. Cut scallops off the over-sink trim, and tossed the railing on hood vent and soffet. Spent money on labor and material to finish project. 4. Blue storm laminate FX180; large pieces were costly but I had no expensive corner cuts (so no seams), saved $$ using plain edges, more realistic anyway. PS got moving packet from postoffice and used the included Lowes 10% off coupon (on countertop). 5. A friend removed and repurposed old countertop (no removal or dump fees). 6. Designed my backsplash and had it put over old laminate back splash. Large tile over stove was $300 display, I paid $50. Plus I saved on glass tile that would have been used instead. My kitchen isn't as dark as it appears in videos. Hubby was very repentant for yelling that I would surely ruin the cabinets. Here is a link that might be useful: none...See MoreHow much cubic feet of soil do you need to fill this 4x4 bed?
Comments (9)Depends on what type of soil you use to fill the raised bed as to how "fluffy" it might be and how much it might compact. A mix of garden soil and compost might be the fluffiest and it will settle some but to expect to lose 25% of the volume to settling is excessive. And if you use a bagged planting mix, it will settle even less, as those tend to be more compacted/condensed in the bag to begin with. Volume is volume and if the basic math calculation to fill the bed is 12 cubic feet and you use 6 - 2cf bags to fill, you have your 12 cubic feet. If the soil is more fluffy, it will just appear to be more than you need, then settle to the expected amount. Not sure where any calculus enters the equation.............See MoreLooking for Plant Recommendations in Zone 9.
Comments (11)I was planning to keep the BOP's trimmed to manage the size of the clump but I'm not married to them being in that spot if that is not realistic and would love to hear some alternative suggestions. I'd like to plant something along the fence that will grow 8-10' tall to cover the fence and give some visual interest and privacy. The area is pretty shady and the sun that it does get is filtered through some oak trees and the palm that you can see. I have Podocarpus along the back fence line of my property and would like to do something different. In front of that, I'd like a shorter shrub form that will add color and attract pollinators (milkweed? ironweed? black eyed susan?) and perhaps some groundcover, like Mondo Grass, as a front border to the space if I have room....See MoreWould two 18in pendants be big enough over a 9ft 4in by 4ft 4in island
Comments (34)I too have spent an enormous amount of time looking at lighting and it feels like I’ve just reached a whole new level of adulting 😆. I love your Kichler light and it pairs so nicely with the dining room fixture! After your first comment on this thread I looked into getting that Kichler light for our kitchen but the brass one only comes with clear glass. Bummer! Anyways, I’m so thankful for both of your help! After spending so much time trying to figure it out on my own I was starting to forget what kind of lighting I was wanting in the first place 😅. I think the Hinkley one will be perfect for our kitchen!...See Morelamguy
