They clash. If the cherry were darker and the oak lighter and, you'd still have to watch the undertones here. Natural white oak with no stain could work with the cherry, and it has a hint of green undertones that would make the cherry seem redder, but then you'd have to deal with those green undertones through the rest of the house.

Thanks. What might work for the kitchen cabinets instead of the cherry? The kitchen is not right next to the staircase but you can see both the cabinets and the oak post/railing from certain positions.

You will see that I have already removed the old flooring down to the plywood subfloor, ripped out the soffits and removed one of the kitchen cabinets. I'm better at demolition than at figuring out the new design. :-)

Will you be installing new countertops? That figures into the equation as well.

I really like the organic-ness of your oak. Have you given any thought to some new painted cabinets at all? If you are not keen on all painted how about mixing some quarter sawn oak cabinetry with some painted?

That's a lot of wood in a fairly small space. I'd consider using glass in as many of the upper cabinet doors as you can.

In my view, floors look best when they are darker than the cabinetry that's on them. It's very hard to make oak and cherry work together, because their grain patterns and natural tones are so different. Keep in mind that cherry, of all the wood species, changes and deepens more over time than anything else. Factory finishes and stains slow it, but it still changes.

I also recommend painting your stair risers and balusters in the white of your trim. It will help manage the dose of wood in the house, and lighten and brighten the space considerably.

The other suggestions I've received are:
1. Go with white cabinets and an oak floor
2. Use a maple that is lighter than the oak for the cabinets and floor.
Any thoughts on those ideas?
I am renovating in preparation for selling in the next two years, so I would like a solution that would appeal to a large percentage of prospective buyers.

If you are doing this for sale, I'd recommend:
White cabinets with brushed nickel hardware and glass doors in the upper cabinets on the far right and far left.
Black quartz (Silestone or Cesarstone or the like) countertops.
An oversized undermounted stainless sink. (If you're interested I have a great source for those).
White subway tile with hardly any grout line from countertop to cabinet bottom on the stove wall.
Mid-toned (cherry or maple stained) oak floors.
Warm gray walls.
Carefully thought out ambient and task lighting.

I know - snore - but it's classic, fresh, attractive to virtually everyone, flexible, neutral, and clean.
