Stained Glass Scraps, etc.

OK, finally took pics of this weekends score. Here's the stained glass scraps. They're awesome and there has to be about 10-15lbs of all different colours.

These are the tiles that were on the curb with a free sign last week.

All of this was from a lady who held a "free garage sale". She set it all up on tables and didn't want a penny for any of it!

The yellow rose china is beautiful and has 22kt gold around the rim. Not sure if it's worth anything but it sure is pretty. Here's a pic of the back of one of the plates.

Found a box of birdhouses on the curb. These are gonna be fun! I want to do the lighthouse with river rocks, I think. They're all a little worn and weathered, but I'll be able to fix them up no problem. The little sun face was in the box with them, thought it might make a cute wall hanging once it's mosaiced.

This is another really cool curb find. I have no idea what it was used for, but how could I resist?

It's solid wood, really sturdy, hollow inside and has a hole in the top.

Now that I have some stuff to mosaic ON, I just need to find the time to get started on a project. I can't wait!

Cindy, Where EXACTLY do you live again? I'll be right over to scour your neighborhood! What a find! Those tiles sure look vintage to me. And the scraps! And the flowers on those dishes! Beautiful! Don't know what that wooden thing WAS but it could be the base for a market umbrella, to cover your mosaic table, don'tcha know?

Are these scraps of colored glass? I saw a fountain quite awhile back on here that I would kill for. I need to look in my files for the picture I saved. Great...I can't find my picture. It was the most awesome thing I've seen. It was one of those bubblers where the water disappears into the stones below. There were chucks and pieces of brightly colored glass all around the area. I saved the picture hoping my son in-law, who works for Libbey glass, could get me some scrap glass pieces to do it with. Still working on it...but now I can't figure out what CD I put the picture on. Does anyone else remember it? ~Sandy~

Slateberry, from your pics, I'd say the two side windows and the area around the pause marks is original--the colors look right, and it is a pain to change out old glass with stained--I've done that on my main parlor window--as high up as that looks, it would be even tougher--so I bet it's original. As to the balcony, do the prints show spindles, or are they just calling the knee-wall a railing? Worthy, the big draw in old homes for most buyers IS the original details--they are unmatchable today without huge cost--and add significantly to resale value if they are still there for the next owners. Don't care about stuff like that, then why are you in such a house? Newer is usually cheaper to keep up; don't care if you risk losing prospective buyers by altering your house's original details--then go ahead and kiss your dollars goodbye. As to style--old houses tend to be well-built and appeal because of their design--and that is something which anyone can appreciate--don't you have an idea when something appeals to you or when it doesn't? If you change exterior features a house just won't 'look' right, and the parts which don't fit will become obvious as you look hard at a place. Most old house buyers have a basic idea of what fits or appeals to them, and want houses which preserve as much of that charm as possible. I had a vague idea of the different styles, but I educated myself during my years in my house--you just need to look at a few plan books to get an idea; the one thing I KNEW when house hunting was this: I grew up in a 50's ranch, and would never buy such a house for myself--I had to have two stories, and something with some character inside, not just boxes with basic trim as I'd grown up in.

Here is what it looks like now after painting it Palladian Blue (thanks, sueb20, for the correct spelling): This is a spare cabinet door I have that is a dark alder (which is quite similar to cherry): I do like this much better. This shade still has a tinge of red in it. I'm wondering if I should aim for this type of finish or something without the red undertones? Also, if I were to layer a brownish/black gel stain (like a walnut or java) would it work better to reduce the red/orange of the existing stain? Other possibility could be a mahogany, but since the existing stain has quite a bit of red/orange, perhaps that'd be too much? I'm not going to sand away the entire stain there now, just enough to get off the poly layer. The cultured granite doesn't photograph too well, but it has little greyish/black flecks in it. Usually I find a java stain too dark for my taste, but I'm curious how it would look next to the cultured granite. I don't think it works too well with the existing finish--it's too orange and shiny for me, as the same time, is it fairly good shape and I don't want to ruin it. Next task, though, is to clean the grout in the floor tile and reseal before DH and DS return so the bathroom can be used again.

Old dvds can be cut in half then split into two layers and then the pretty side cut up into shards". They are beautiful! I guess you can also use cd's but a friend of mine is and says because they are only one layer its really hard to cut thems so you have to boile them first. Sorry I don't have much glass being more of a broken dish person with the exception of one recent tile project. Good luck with your wonderful projects. Kathy

I'm with Rosie where do you live????Those dishes would be 10 bucks a piece where I live .....no bargains here boo hoo!I've cut up some pretty high class plates in my day but hey it's my life and that's how I like my plates best broken lol!

You'll be in little glass pieces for a long time!
And... I really, really like the tiles!
Certainly pays to keep your eyes open in your area!!!

I'm w/LIL: mouth on floor. What a huge haul on the glass nippits, and I'd mosaic the pedestal for a plant stand.

Rosemarythyme - C'mon over, I'll show ya all the good spots. I'm about an hour north of Toronto in Barrie, ON. The tiles are definitely vintage, it'll be fun to use them in a project. DH and I were talking about the pedestal when we got it and that is EXACTLY what we thought of using it for. Gonna have to see if our umbrella fits.

Shrty, lilym, chickee, chris2u - Thanks, I love hunting for new treasures and sharing pics with you guys. I hope no one is getting sick of the pics, because I really like getting everybody's feedback and project ideas.

Annie - You can come shopping with me and Rosie and then we'll go back to your place to sell it, lol. I am feeling a little guilty about the yellow rose china, it's not even chipped or very worn. Might have to do a little research before I smash 'em up.

Kate and Slow - Thanks, I spent a couple of hours last night sorting the glass pieces by colour. I'm only part way through the first box, lol. It'll be worth it instead of searching through it when I'm in the middle of a project. Plant stand is definitely an option for the pedestal. Hmmm....gonna have to think about what to do with it.

Toomuch, that's exactly the problem, lol. Too many ideas running through my head and not enough projects getting done. I'm gonna have to ground myself....right after I go check out the curb alert posting on Freecycle for a "decorative glass insert for a door". It's Ronnie's fault for posting those pics:) LMAO, I can't stop, too much cool stuff out for the taking.

******** When I Was doing suncatchers " full speed " -- I'd have dishpans full of scraps that I gave away .... probably about 70 pounds . I might keep them this time around !

By the way, I did end up getting the window glass, lol. Think I'll try a GOG with my stained glass scraps. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Wowser Chris, you made out a lot better than I did!!!! Love those dishes and the other tiles you got and I'm sure you will find lots of uses for all that scrap glass.
