Darn kid......

As you probably know, we have been raising DH's grandson the last three years. He is 12. He was diagnosed with Asperger's autism and Developmentally Delayed before he came to us. Within a short time we came to highly doubt the diagnosis. A while ago, I spoke with his principal (a specialist in Special Ed) and she totally agrees. We will have him re-evaluated by a psychologist and his education team of 12-14 people.

DGS more likely has behavioral problems and maybe post-traumatic stress. His one year older brother brutalized him for years and currently is in long-term custody for sexually abusing his grandma's day care kids, has been in institutions most of the time since he was 9 for violence. DGS has been treated like an infant all his life, no discipline, no expectations, no requirements. All he had to do was breathe and play video games and eat pizza or McDonald's. But he actually is just a normal kid, no impairments, just a lot of attitude, no education, and a lot of wanting to do only what he wants.

My vent:

Last night we brought him to his school orientation. He immediately went into his act "I am just too dumb to breathe so don't expect anything of me". He's having his first male teacher which he doesn't like the thought of. Actually all three main teachers are men and the six graders will rotate about 2 hours a day with each teacher. When his home room teacher asked DGS his name, he just stared off into space playing dumb. Grrrrrr. Normally he's bright and extremely social. Then he told his teacher he hurt his brain.

Out in the car, I jumped him and asked why he said such a thing when it's not true. He said he bumped his head once and it hurt. The brat was just trying to warn the teacher not to expect anything of him. Teacher and I will have a talk later and you can bet DGS and I will talk more too.

Last year he started wetting the bed. No physical problems, mind you. When I asked him why, he said he liked it. His first day back home after a summer at the other grandma's, he wet the bed. After all this time, I've lost my patience. I told him if it happens again, he gets a spanking. Now his diaper has been dry for 3 nights. He can control it IF he wants to. Thanks for letting me vent.
