Wow, three hundred for the track? Is that installed, seems a bit high to me if it is regular door track. Check the price at Lowes or HD as I that seems quite high to me.

As for the material, I would probably use something like Alder and the cost will not be that much.I am guessing less than a $100.

What guage is the metal? You may possibly go to your local plumbing shop for that. Don't know about the price or size required.

Check the Wood Handbook for rot resistance of various wood types.
Chapter 15 covers finishing.
Alder is in the middele (3 on a 1-5 scale) for paint holding.

One thing you can do on exterior wood if you are building the doors is treat the end grain of every piece with Minway Wood Hardener. This will greatly reduce water absorption through the end grain. A common cause of paint failure and resulting rot.

Just rough estimating the board feet of alder or popular needed to build two 8 by 8 doors out of six quarter material comes out closer to 300.00 than 100. Personally I'd use 8 quarter material for big doors like those then you'd be looking at more than 400 bucks

Looks like that door is made of 2x6's and a piece of 2x10.
And you want to expand it to 8ft by 8ft
So, 6-2x6's 8ft long and 1-2x10 8ft long to make one door.

I checked the price of treated 2x6's a few weeks back
and it was almost 70cents per lineal foot.
And you need 48 lineal feet of 2x6 for one door. $33.70
And one 2x10 8feet long (I'll take a guess), $12.00
Looks like a cost of about $50 per door,
or like jrice said, about $100 for the set.

For track, Tractor Supply has box rail track and hardware.
Box rail track (TSC # 3551864) is about $30 for a 10 foot section (you need 2).
The roller/hangers (TSC # 3542035) are about $52.
Doesn't say if that is a pair or just one.
Plus some other miscellaneous hardware you mite need.
Looking at $100 to $150 per door, so $300 doesn't look too out
of line provided that is for the complete hardware set.

So far you are up to $400 for this project.
And you have to build the doors yourself.

It sounds as if you're thinking of these as a potential DIY project, which I think is a mistake. Doors are complex constructions, like flat pieces of furniture. Those joints between rails and stiles are all pinned mortise and tenon. The cost of the materials is going to seem like nothing next to the time you'd invest learning to construct these. You can't just whack them together with a nail gun.

Plenty of doors are made with plain old dowelled joints (use dowels about 1/3 of the board thickness, two per joint).
The problem is usually in the molding pattern on the frame and the grooves for holding panels.
There are plenty of router nits available to cut these, and this design looks like it relatively little decorative edging anyway.

A quote on a 16' inulated garage door Steel/vinyl amd and the opener installed was $1065.

I've cut mortise and tenon joints on a door like that.
Took me a whole day to cut and fit only 6 joints.
And I took the easy way out using rounded tenons.

So a 16 foot door without openener would be around $1000.

If you do not have access to a hollow chisel mortiser, mortises on both sides can be cut quickly with a plunge router and loose tennons used.
Stronger than a doweled joint, and jsut as strong as a regular mortise and tennon (in some cases actually stronger).

Thanks everyone for your replies. The material costs are surprisingly lower than what I had expected. My dad has a wood shop that he built. He built all of the cabinets and drawers and he just built my daughter a beautiful toy box with those joints y'all are talking about. He has all these fancy expensive tools that he's proud of.

So, I'm thinking about asking him to make the doors. He's a pediatrician that in his spare time likes to build things. But, since he's so busy right now (babies with colds and RSV) I don't want to ask him to build them until I know about how long it would take him.

Oh, btw, the track I found is for barn doors. It holds up to 500 pounds. Maybe I won't need that hefty of a track.

You can't build satisfactory doors from framing lumber. Well, barn doors, perhaps. You need good weather-resistant species of hardwood, properly prepared (jointed flat before planing) for door work. All the joinery in the world can't untwist a ornery door stile.
My guestimate is $280 per leaf for 8/4 mahogany.

I read your posts over on the Home Building forum.
If possible, when you go to that salvage place in NO to look
at doors, see if you can find 4 matching 48 inch doors.
Take 2 doors and put them together to make one big door.
Do the same with the other two doors. Then hang the set.
Since these are sliding doors on a track you don't have to
worry about gravity trying to pull the doors out of square.
And if you use real wood doors you can just dowel 2 of them together.

Only problem I see is even two 48 inch doors put together
won't make an 8x8ft door. Doors are only 80 inches tall.
So you would be 16 inches short on the height.
There are ways to make up this height but by the time you do
all that you might as well have made the doors yourself.

If the latter, wouldn't that be like bidding true
divided light windows on a "per light" basis?
If the former then your estimate for mahogany mite be correct.
It's been a LONG time since I priced any mahogany.
Why would you choose mahogany for the doors.

Since when?
Many doors are made of pine, fir, and other softwoods.
Almost any solid wood door you purchase at a lumber yard is made from softwoods, including interior paneled doors.
Hardwood doors are stain grade and much more expansive then the typical paint grade softwood door. They are also often special orders.
It is the grade of the lumber that causes problems making doors from ordinary 2x lumber found at the lumber yard, not the species.
Many softwoods have better shrinkage charecteristics than common hardwoods, especially having a closer match betwen tangential and radial shrinkage.

Any larger hardwood dealer typically also carries higher grades of softwood lumber suitable for bulding furniture, let alone doors.

Redwood and cypress are very good choices for exterior woodwork.

I was distinguishing a cabinet-grade of wood vs. framing lumber. True enough, you can use select or clear pine for doors, but at my hardwood dealer (there's that word again) I can buy mahogany for the same price.
Any off the shelf pine door you buy today is not solid wood. It is veneered over a glued-up core of very sketchy quality.

Depends on who you purchase from..
Check the Wood Engineering Handbook if you want to see the shrnkage of woods with humidity.

Softwoods often have some real advantages here.

Where do yoou buy mahogany for the same price as pine?

lots of the homes in New orleans have eight foot doors. Seven feet would work as well. I'd just hang them lower on the track A little space at the top (between the soffit/eave and the door) would be fine and would allow for ventilation. Here in Louisiana, most of the exterior woodwork is done in spanish cedar or cypress. Otherwise, you have a huge maintenance problem on your hands. I don't know what the salvaged doors will be made of. They probably have more interior doors than exterior and the interiors are going to be made of something else. If the price is right, I'll get them even though they are not cypress or cedar. The "weathered" look is in, right? Haha!
