Comments (10)Wow, I just read your story. That is TERRIBLE! I agree with everyone else -- you are being discriminated against and I think it is worth suing them. But you have to weigh the emotional and time costs of suing. If you have the time and you think it will help protect someone else in the future as well as provide some closure to you, then do it. If not -- if it will only add to your stress -- and you think you can let it go, then move on to your next apartment and enjoy your life. I will tell you that we almost moved into an apartment in which this could have been us. We needed to find a bigger apartment because we were planning to have a baby. We found one that we thought we liked, though it was a bit expensive for us. We negotiated the rent down a bit and signed the lease. That night I had a panic attack about it because the owner of the apartment, who lived below this apartment, had gone on and on about the previous tenant who had a child that cried a lot. He said something about not knowing our plans but assumed we wouldn't be the same kind of tenants. It worried me because babies cry. You have no idea what your child's temperment is going to be like and I realized that if we were lucky enough to get pregnant and have a baby, this guy and his wife could potentially make our lives miserable (including but not limited to increasing our rent significantly). The next day we backed out of the lease (at great expense to us). Several months later, we found an even better apartment (and I was pregnant by then) that was less expensive. The landlord is a peach. I have asked him numerous times whether my son's crying or his toddling (or his periodic sippy cup drops from his high chair) bothers him or his brother. He always responds by saying things like "babies cry" or "I hope we aren't too loud for you!" It is SO nice to be in a space where you can just live your lives and not have to worry all of the time. We are all respectful of one another as well as understanding. It makes such a difference! I hope this new apartment will provide you with the same kind of safe-haven we have found with our apartment. You deserve it! But, just in case you find that someone complains about noise in your new place, you can always try corkboard for the ceiling.... Hang in there! I am sure this nasty woman who has forced this on you will have her day. Her negative energy is bound to come back and bite her in the bum one of these days... Comments (21)Perfect - this is what I thought was the case. Rarely do you see 'dictators' in marriages - well, they exist, but not as often as is suggested. Okay, so couple of things. First, think about this quote: "You don't live with the spouse in your home, you live with the spouse in your head." This suggests that most people often don't 'really' know their partners, for lack of clear communication. I would say that just from your last post, there is a lot of second guessing, supposition, and future prediction going on without even really talking about it. Sometimes there is a value to meta-communication, talking about how you talk. So forget the content for a minute, let's focus on the process. Also, if part of YOUR body language/tone suggests that this trip is an opportunity to get away from him, of course he's going to feel abandoned and threatened! Simply by you giving this thread it's title speaks volumes about how you feel about him and your marriage. You can't blame him for having those feelings, of "Gee she wants to get away from me. i don't like this!" That's normal. That's a far cry from, "My husband nixed the idea" which suggests he's an arse. Finally, marriage is about negotiation. Sometimes, you're going to do things he doesn't like, and vise versa. The key is to negotiate these things so that no one feels used, or abused. It's okay to say, I know you're not crazy about me wearing red, but it's my favorite color. Is there a way we can work this out so we can both get our needs met - maybe I can wear red during the week, and when we're together on the weekends i can wear your favorite color?" Silly example but you get the point. Sometime when emotions are high, we abandon the very basics of human interaction: Clear communication, negotiation, and kindness. Good luck with this - I don't think the underlying issue is this vacation, but it's a good distraction anyway....See More(help me) Step-by-Step "Filling the Cabinets"
Comments (50)" if feels less overwhelming and more like an interesting puzzle" good going carrie! keep us posted on your progress. I decided I should do something similar. With all my stacks of stuff to 'to do'. I'm going to plan on attacking 3 a day - and if I get 2 done I'll be so pleased. small steps. I'm starting with the stack of papers by my bedroom window. It WAS a stack until my dog thought she saw someone waaaay out at the road thru the 6" I had the blind pulled up (and window open). the papers went flying to the floor. I did rather swish them together - but not good and still on the floor... so that's 1st. I even have a few empty folders to put them in by category (it's car, doc, vet receipts etc). I already made myself make a trip down the road to my sister's to drop off my trash (I take mine there to be picked up). I'd been putting that off for at least a week. Getting serious with organizing my pantry is on the list (it was once...). plus several boxes of paper 'stuff' from when I moved 2 or 3 yrs ago... good grief! if I die before this stuff is done, my son will kill me!...See More- 19 years ago
