Thrift Store Sale

I've been looking for colorful pieces to break for mosaics and found a really good thrift store having a half price sale Saturday. Each of the vases was only $2.50 on sale so this whole load was around $25.00. I'm having a hard time with my friend about breaking the vase on the right.

Good stash. I like the dishes with the purple flowers. Lots of pretty colors.

I can't remember where you are located, but in my experience with rain, freezing etc, that I am now careful of the kind of dishes I use for outdoor projects...ceramic does not last, it chips and flakes, but porceline holds up pretty good. I'm big on outdoor projects as my house is already full, lol! But I just wanted to let you know in case you didn't know yet...sheesh, I've been outta the loop for months around here, and seeing a pretty stash like that is REALLY getting my creative juices going!!! There's lots of good color combos there!!!! Good scores!!!

We can argue this point back and forth, but the sensible approach is to make sure water can drain, because once it's in there, it's going to want to run downhill, not jump over the pot rim. It's not a question of what you CAN do, or what you can get away with; rather, what's likely to be best for the plant, and there is no question that pots with drain holes are far less likely to present you with issues related to the roots. ..... and there is no way to flush salts from containers w/o drain holes. I was at TS yesterday & didn't see a single colored glass plate! Did get an adorable antique-looking wooden pelican 16 in. tall of wood on a weathered post with "old" rope & netting & a soda bottle cap painted tan with rounded tack through center of it holding the rope in place. Great gift for DS & wife! Keep looking but probably better luck at yard sales. I think some people make deals with TS owners so pay more for glass or dolls that have good resale value in antique shops as it saves the antique owner time as they don't have to go to sales,1 stop shopping & the TS owner gets more than they could get from us bargain shoppers. I know after 1st few months new TS opens all the colored glassware & dolls disappear, so you know that is when the antique owners "found" the store! I've seen them checking out dolls & said oh, nice dolls & was told they weren't for sale(to me) as I saw the woman looking take several in a bag & those left were put out for $12-15. And I wouldn't pay that. Go early in day this summer & you should have good luck at yard sales. Jan

We do reuse and recycle many household items here too. My kids are all built differently so we don't hand down many clothes. I donate clothes in decent condition to the school or the thrift stores. People are funny about used things. It can be quite entertaining at times. I've run into people who wouldn't be caught dead shopping at a garage sale or thrift store. Those same people do shop antique stores and estate sales which are glorified garage sales at higher prices. Then there are those people who don't shop thrift stores because that is for poor people. That's laughable. Truly poor people probably couldn't afford the prices at some of the thrift stores. I shop there because I the thrill of the hunt and it is possible to find a bargain on some things, but usually not clothes. I live in one of those areas where people often overprice their garage sale clothes. I can buy new for less. Overall, my best clothes bargains usually come from the mall during the 75-90% off sales. I wouldn't be too offended because someone doesn't want your hand me downs. I've gotten offers before. Honestly, I just didn't want to deal with the extra work. Sometimes when you get clothes ahead, you're storing it for a while even possibly a couple of years. Sometimes less is more when you're trying to organize and manage a household.

Hmmm...I could write up a HUGE list, I love my area thrift store. The best deals for this summer though... Pottery Barn decor for $1 each that I found in the catalog from the winter for no less than $50 each. A set of LeCrueset cookware still in the box for $25. A box of what the seller called junk...that ended up having an almost complete set of antique french flatware, several great ironstone pieces (my first ones - yay!), and more great antique and vintage kitchen wares than one could possibly hope for - for the bargain price of $5. OMG...I almost felt bad when I got home and researched what I bought. But I had to remind myself - one man's trash is another man's treasure...and this was a treasure for sure in my world.

Calamity, thank you so much for that information. I'd never heard that before and would have put alot of the chalkier ceramic on outside projects. Until my present project I'd never done anything for outside before, and I'm glad to realize that I've used good porcelain on the vast majority of it. Good information! Thanks so much for taking time to write me about it. I'm sure others that are newer to the art like me will take note too.

Great stuff. I always have a hard time with curved surfaces to apply to mosaics.
Can't wait to see what you do.
I did low fire mosaics for years and Calamity is right, they don't fair up well.

Nice score! I'd be hestiant to break any of those vases..all 3 are beautiful! Then again, they would make for some nice colorul shards!

It's fun to return home after a few days and read the responses to a post, isn't it? I really did have a fun time grabbing those pieces as everyone else dove for the beautiful clothes they had there. I'm really going to have trouble breaking that pretty vase on the right, but I will. (EG) I won't have a problem at all with the red plate though.....it kind of gives me the creeps when it's away from the other dishes. LOL It does have a $28.00 original price on it though from Nordy's, so someone must have loved it as you do, Crafty Lady. It'll make beautiful red shards, and I always have a tough time finding red.
