tung oil vs hand scraped polyurethane wood floors
Comments (1)Without knowing the actual finish it's hard to say which is best for you. There's usually not much Tung Oil in Tung Oil finishes and polyurethane can be solvent or water based. In general polyurethane finishes are harder, more brittle and vegetable oil with polyester resin finishes are softer less brittle but it depends on the proportion of the ingredients. Of course the most critical factor is the hardness and cut of the wood....See MoreHelpful video: oiling wooden countertops
Comments (6)Probably have already broken every rule for the care of new butcherblock so don't ask me to vouch for any of that... but I'd like to add the suggestion that while you have greasy hands and that rag in the hand and you're standing right there at the countertop, use the oil on your dishwasher-bleached wood handled knives. I did that yesterday and my beloved old Chicago Cutlery looks like it's twenty years younger....See Morewood counter top finishing
Comments (8)I would just use a mineral oil and beeswax combination. Some people prefer the look of tung oil as it has a darker more amber color to it. And by tung oil finish I don't mean Waterlox. I see a lot of posts calling Waterlox a tung oil finish which is really not correct. Waterlox is a varnish, just like the oil based Minwax Polyurethane you find at any hardware store. But it uses phenolic resins instead of polyurethane resins and one of the oils in the forumulation is tung. But it is very different than a 100% tung oil finish. Don't get my wrong, I love the look and repairability of Waterlox compared to many finishes but I would not put it on a food prep counter....See MoreBest way to finish butcher block counters? Comments (2)Little late to the rodeo here, and I guess you got the butcher block finished already. When I installed kitchens, we used a product called "Good Stuff" that Bally block recommended . It was kinda an oil based paste that you rubbed in then buffed off. Several coats provided a nice matte finish. Cant attest for how long the finish lasts, but I've never got a call back to re apply....See Morebrickeyee
