Stained Glass & Mosaics

I scored today!!

My DH is in route sales and he has 3 Lowes on his route. He asked them to save broken tile for me. We went and picked it up today and I got a shopping cart FULL for $1.15. There are some 12 x 12 pieces that I don't like, but I figure they would be good for painting on. I got some pretty slate and even some marble, but it is like the backsplash around our bathroom sink and it is thick. I don't think my wet saw could cut it. I also got a 25 lb bag of Maepi (sp) Irish Cream grout for $2.22. They had two 25-lb bags of another grout for $1.44 each but the color was quarry red and I didn't think I would ever use that color and didn't think painting it would cover the color very well. I've spent 2 weekends cutting up plates. DH told me I need to start gluing it to something now.

I keep laying it out and arranging and rearranging, but I just haven't been satisfied with anything so I scoop it up and throw it back in the bucket and then a few days later I do it all again.

I can't remember if I posted here or on the junk board that I was going to limit myself to what would fit in 2 big tubs, but my patio is quickly being covered by piles of tile and dishes, I have 8 plastic containers of stained glass sorted by color in my BR, 1 container I haven't sorted yet, plus 1 container of china in my BR. Then in my office closet the top shelf is glass things I've been saving to mosaic on, glass gems, beaded necklaces, etc. Not to mention the glue, the GE II, the thin set, grout, and sealer in the utility room. We have 4 cats and use the large Tidy Cat containers, which are perfect for storing stuff like grout in. I told DH he needed to build me a shed just to put all my containers in.

As you can tell I've mastered the collecting part. Still can't get a finished project yet though.

Tigerwiggy, you are a great collector! Get over the perfectionist part and start putting something together. Start smal and simple. When you first start mosaicing, you often ask yourself, "is this going to look okay?" The grouting really brings it together but you have to glue your glass or dishes FIRST. You will learn from each project ----- but you can't learn if you don't do. I'll bet you have some great dishes and tiles ready to go. Can't wait to see your first project!

Oh, I LOVE the phrase "limit myself to......." Yeah, RIGHT - that's one talent we mosaicists don't have "limit ourselves to ....." Once you start, you're hooked. Now, get to gluing it to SOMETHING - try a flower pot, a box, a piece of furniture - ANYTHING. You don't know what you're missing until you actually USE that stash. You already have the disease, now TREAT it.

Thanks y'all (showin' my Texas heritage here). I can sort of paint but not enough to do details like bluebonnets and stuff. I was thinking maybe I could spray the whole thing red, then do an Americana thing and paint a flag on the bottom, seal it well and then hang it either out front or on my deck. I wish I had a covered porch. It wouldn't do well on my front door, it has a big glass oval cutout in it and doesn't do wreaths very well. OR...DH and I have been talking about getting a nice plaque with our house numbers on it because what we have now are cheesy brass numbers that don't show up well on the brick front. I was thinking about doing a mosaic one but what if painted them on the bottom of the basket and hung that on the brick?! Hmmmm, that's something to think about. Again, it would have to be sealed really really well. But hmmmm. I seem to do my best thinking when I'm typing so bear with me here. I'll let you guys know what I decide and post pics when I'm done, but keep the suggestions coming! Robin

Thanks for your kind words . . . and your enabling (LOL) ;^D I do have to make one correction, though: the gold & white plates were $1 each, not $2. Patty: girl, you get out a lot! I've seen your bargains, but if you want to zip down here, we can go out bargain hunting together and really do some damage! Jane: you have the turquoise? I saw a few of those recently; they're lovely! I have 4 (or 6?) of the same pattern in the cream and really like them. It's scary when you have so many dishes you can't remember things like that! You should have seen DD yesterday when she saw the 3 new groups of dishes (ROFLMAO). There was a lot of eye rolling! Jeanne: yes, you are a very bad/good enabler! I plan on checking out some tablescape pics here to inspire me. Kathleen: thanks. If you have any pics of white & gold tables, I'd love to see them. I need inspiration. Punk: Thanks! Vala, even if you cannot crochet, you can still make a nice blanket. First be sure to wash and put in the dryer the fabric you will use to preshrink it, and then iron it. You sew two squares together and be sure to round the corners--I use a saucer to trace a nice corner. Then sew them together, and trim the seam allowance thinner. Then turn it right side out and blind sew close the hole you left for turning it inside out. Now you can sew on blanket binding tape in cotton or satin OR you can use embroidery floss and do a blanket stitch around the edge. If you want, you can sew one stitch in the body of the blanket with the embroidery floss and cut it off with 1 to 1 1/2 inch tails. Tie a tight double knot, and trim the tails to 3/4 of an inch. Put just a few of these stitches evenly spaced on the blanket, much like you will see done with an old fashioned quilt, but it isn't necessary if you don't want to do it. Voila!

Just make a "practice piece" that way in your mind it doen't have to be perfect. Starting is the hardest part!!

tigerwiggy-checked your page for any possible identifying info. so I could come to your house and rob it of all your stash! (Luckily, they don't collect that kind of info.)Never tell other addicts where the stash is!!
