plywood shelf supports question

I am getting my hand in doing a little bit of cabinetry:

I am making 34W"x28" deep shelves with 3/4" plywood above my refrigerator and I was wondering if I need to install steel strip support across the plywood to stop it from sagging.

Also I would like some advice on how to join the plywood shelves to the vertical pieces, which are 3/4" thick veneered MDF (no choice here, they are fridge cover panels for the kitchen cabinets) I was thinking to install cleat on each side from the bottom to hold the shelf and also use some L brackets from above. But 3/4" screw will be the longest screw that can be used.

The box formed will be a shelf/cabinet but will be covered by doors.

I suggest you fasten a 1 1/2" stiffener on the front and back edges of the plywood. That should be adequate to prevent sagging unless you are storing excessively heavy loads on the shelves. It will cover the exposed plywood edge as well as hide somewhat the cleats that support the shelves. Screws that go 3/4" into the MDF will be adequate. I would space the screws about 6" apart. Drill and countersink the holes in the cleats slightly larger than the screws and be sure not to overtighten the screws or they will strip out.

Hi, do you 1 1/2" high or wide? What kind of material should the stiffener be made of?

Hi Juno - from what I've learned, it really depends on how big the shelf needs to be and how much weight you'll be putting on it. If its just a few tchotchkes then you should be fine with an "off the shelf" shelf and mounting hardware. There are quite a few places that sell these kinds of shelves, link below. You can also build the shelves yourself with a little elbow grease - google "torsion box shelves" for instructions. That seems to be the popular choice and would give you a lightweight alternative. Also look up "french cleat" for mounting hardware - that also seems to be a popular way to attach them. If you do decide to go with solid wood, that Hafele hardware at the top of the page is for solid shelves and would provide the invisible support you're probably looking for. They have an option for masonry installation and it looks like they come with pretty detailed instructions. We're going to have to DIY the hardware for ours because our shelves will be so deep and long and I want triple assurance the things won't pull off the wall when I load them up. I placed an order yesterday with a local saw mill - they're going to give us ripped and planed boards to glue together ourselves, and then we'll take them back so they can plane them again to the correct thickness and clean up the ends. I'll sand and stain them myself, and then according to ctycdm's instructions above we'll affix them to the walls. Hope this helps! EDIT: Also, FWIW, I calculated the weight of our longest shelf (approx 75"x12"x2") to be 32 lbs. Here's what we did for a floater- it's also stainless and our KD found it through an outdoor kitchen dealer. We wanted to avoid having to use supports underneath and really really wanted it to be a true floating shelf - straight & square. The support structure is anchored into the studs and has A LOT of metal (heavy as hell!) and has a stainless "skin". We had the option of putting it over the backsplash tile or having the backsplash go around it ... we went with the later (they put a wood block in to "hold" the space while the tile guy did his thing... then after the tile & shelf were all done, sanded caulk used for the edges: If you're interested, I'll ask my KD where he got it from, Marc

Shelf locks have a purpose as they prevent the back of the shelf from rising when the front is tugged - so mostly defends the shelves which are up higher against impatient people or children who climb onto the counter to reach higher shelves. Generally speaking, it's really easy to pull shelves up or out of a frameless cabinet and not so much (altho possible) on framed cabinets. I prefer shelf pins myself. Link is for photo of Shelf Pins only. I've liked the ones on the left or near left best. You could do both - use pins until you've figured out your favored shelf positions and then use locks on either the front or the back. More expensive but sometimes cool when your cabinet is deep are pull out shelves. You can easily get to stuff on the back (sample for photo) and you can install later as you want. The bummer is that the shelf will be at most, the width of the cabinet door minus 2 times the depth of the sides of the pullout. It will also be a bit shallower.

3/4" x 1 1/2" applied flat to the edge of the plywood. It will stick down 3/4" below the edge of the plywood.

I would use the same wood as the cabinets, maple, oak etc. or even poplar.

Consider using Baltic birch (Russian Birch) 3/4" Multi-ply. It will not sag. You don't need to add thickness on the front or back- the 3/4" panel is plenty rigid. The finished edge actually looks cool since it is all solid hardwood veneers. Or you can cover the edge with solid wood, but there is no need to increase the 3/4" thickness- so you get more storage space.

For the side supports, I would use the KV standards and nail them to the sides of your existing panels. They are strong enough for bookshelves. Installation is easy for a retrofit like you are doing. The shelves will be adjustable.

Hi Aidan, where can I get this plywood you are talking about? I have seen Birch at Lowes but not sure if it is te same thing you are referring to?

It is only available at specialty lumberyards that deal primarily with cabinetmakers and woodworkers. Some places on the internet will ship it to you directly, peices cut to size. (have them cut it oversize a little bit in case the edges get banged up in shipping)
