Love My New Marvin Ultimates - But Screens Defective?

I just had two new Marvin Ultimate casements installed, and am thrilled with the quality. However the screens, which have the wood frames, don't fit well if at all. When the contractor left, he had installed the screens. I wanted to remove them to clean some fingerprints off my new windows. I removed one with a lot of difficulty cause it is extremely tight. Now I can't get it back in properly. It is just too tight so is fitting crooked. And the wood hasn't been painted yet. Once it's painted, the problem will be worse. What can be done to corect this issue?

Order new screens or have them cut down a bit.

What does it mean "have them cut down a bit"? How is that done? Who does it - my windows contractor?

fwiw, we got Marvin Clad Ultimate Double-Hungs for our kitchen renovation, and I am thrilled with how nice they look installed. I was not happy with how the Andersons in the showroom, even though our architect suggested them. We have an old house (> 100 years old), and the Marvins just fit the look of the existing windows in the rest of the house that I couldn't imagine putting the Andersons in. --Lee

I would rank them Marvin - 1, Andersen - 2, and Pella - 3. When you said that you tried to get a quote on Andersen I'm guessing that you meant Renewal by Andersen - that was probably your mistake. I'd contact a regular Andersen distributor to get pricing and recommendations for an installer. I'm not sure who you got the Marvin quote from but they might also quote Andersen for you?

Most window companies use Phifer UltraVue mesh for their "high transparency" screens. You can get a sample from Home Depot and compare it to standard charcoal mesh. You may not see much of a difference from 5 feet away, but look at both screens from 15 feet and the UltraVue screen will be nearly invisible. Not all companies will use UltraVue on a door screen, however (because the mesh is delicate and not feasible for large sizes). So they may have substituted Phifer BetterVue, which is still better than standard charcoal, but not nearly as transparent as UltraVue. The same principle applies to retracting screens -- companies are very reluctant to use lighter mesh on a retracting screen, because it is very delicate and can get twisted up when it rolls back into the tube.

I was just at the Marvin Decarie store and learned that the installer does not belong to Marvin, although I was told it is the same installer they have used for more than 10 years which is why they are able to say the cost and why I'm able to make an appointment for installation with the store. But, I've just learned, there'd be a seperate bill from the installer of 600 installation + 75 delivery + tax. Also, I may have to change the lintil for that 1 bedroom window. They said a new window can only be installed with a satisfactory lintil, and this they said can only be installed by a mason. They estimate that a mason they'd refer me to would cost $100/hour x 5 to 8 hours + scaffold + materials + tax. I must've looked quite upset on my out of the showroom because a salesman stopped me and said that I should take a closeup picture to show the store and they may visit to see if it's needed. So, a new lintil (which I hope I don't need) installed is about $1200 for my 3rd floor window. The salesman showed me there's a good distance between outside air and the layer of wood the extruded aluminum covers. He alleged that he has never heard of any degree of rot under the aluminum clad exterior. That said, he was clear that Marvin's warranty does not cover ANY wood rot or ANY wood deterioration.

Can cut down the lineals of the screen frame slightly to shorten and narrow the screen if that is the issue.

A screen and glass replacement company could do that.

Thanks Windowsonwashington, but I just paid several thousands for these windows. And I could have paid less for another brand but my expectation was that I was paying more for the top quality of the Marvin Ultimates. I don't think it is appropriate for me now to spend more to have the brand new screens fit. I am surprised that the expectation is that the homeowner needs to find a screen and glass company and pay to repair new screens. Is it your experience that new Marvin screens do not fit the new windows they came with?

I'll follow your other suggestion to order new screens. Thanks again

I agree.

Call your installer first and go from there. I am sure Marvin will make it right if the issue is on the manufacturing side of things.

They have demonstrated that attention to detail repeatedly.

Contact who you bought the windows from. Submit it as a manufacturing/warranty issue.

If I am reading this correctly, it sounds like the screens were fine until you took them out. If that is right, from experience the casement screens can be tricky to put back in correctly.
They have some fairly strong springs at the top of the screen. First of all, make sure you are putting the screen back into the correct track. Press upwards at the top of the screen and get it engaged. You will notice then that the bottom of the screen should move easily into place past the top of the operator. Hopefully, this is clear. If something is still wrong. I would start with your installer as he should be able to see you quicker than anyone else and then if necessary, you can enter a warranty claim. As we have seen in other threads, Marvin is very good at taking care of issues.
