WIP Outdoor Lamp

This is something that I've been working on. I had a plastic birdbath that I cut in half and used as a mold with a hypertufa mix. I ran a piece of PVC pipe down the center to house the electrical cord I took from a lamp, then I fashioned some "clips" out of sheet metal to hold the globe on. The globe I got for 50 cents (YEA!!) that was going to be for a totem. Now I plan to mosaic it for the top of the light and set it outside my door. Will post more pics as I get it mosaiced.

Well aren't you the cat's meow!!! How do you make an outside electrical thingy safe in the rain? I run my fountain off a garden electrical extension, but wouldn't have a clue how to do an outside light fixture. This is gonna be really cool. You're so smart in figuring out the clips for the globe. This is REALLY gonna be fun to watch unfold. Huuuuuuuuury. Can't wait to see.

Wow, what a great idea! I have a plastic base that I haven't found any use for..a mold may be perfect!!

Those clips are such a good idea..

Geeze so many ideas!! and now fall is approaching

Doody, Looking GOOD! Well, I have done this but I used landscaping wire, the innards of a cheap mailbu light fixtures and a transformer. My insulators sit atop a 1 1/2 or 2" pipe real nicely so I can take them off when I need to change the lightbulb. The solar method may be trickier but I think it's totally do-able. My sister has motion sensor lights under the eaves in front of her garage door that she has powered solar. I've seen some that have a wire from the solar collection to the actual light. If the length of the wire is enough to get to the roofline from where your insulator lamplight is then you may be good to go! Show us your progress when you get there. I would place the pole in a PVC sleeve. Last summer, we installed three post lamps throughout our yard. (1 in front yard, 2 in the back.) We set the aluminum post lamp poles in PVC-sleeved, cement-filled holes. The PVC protrudes from the soil about 2 inches, doesn't really show, and also protects the finish from damage from the string trimmer when the lawn is mowed. I wired all three lamps with low-voltage landscape wire so we wouldn't have to dig deep trenches to bury 120v electrical conduit. Strung the lamps to a low-voltage transformer and inserted 12 VAC l.e.d. light bulbs. The lamps look great, use less electricity, the l.e.d. bulbs should last for years, and we didn't have to destroy the yard (many trees!) to bury conduit.

Used to be you called the gas company. Perhaps a plumber, depending on the nature of the problem. New mantle is a an easy DIY task, there's really not much else that can go wrong with these.

Yeah that is cool, what does the globe look like? I could only see two pictures. It would be really awesome if you could find a few more globes and do one for each season!!!

Dh and I just finished our first table using the hypertufa recipe. Its now in the curing stage. He was surprised at how much lighter it is using this method.

That is going to be neat when you get it done .Great idea.For those who might want to make one .With Chr.coming on .Look for those spot light you put out side they are green .At the end of crist.I buy them on sale .I use them to make things for my garden.

Peaches, that is AWESOME!!!plastic birdbath huh... I'll have to look for that, cause it made a wonderful mold - that is great, can't wait to see it finished, it's so creative!
