Last, but not least, this is currently the bedding/art that I have in the room.

How much of the furniture in the room is your style and how much of it is "it's my first apartment and it's furnished from my parents' basement"?
I have an eclectic sense of style, but I find myself drawn to unique pieces that have a bit of a story. The blue dresser is my favorite piece, it has a ton of character. However I don't want to stick with all the same style in the room, I don't like matching things. I also like contemporary modern things, pretty much anything that makes you thing where did you find that? The small dresser/night stand has been in my family for years, so I want to make it work. I'm not opposed to upcycling it, but I'm not sure how I'd go about it. And the chair I don't care too much about either way.

What activities do you want to do in the room? Sleeping, obviously. But getting dressed? Surfing the net? Yoga? Reading--in bed or a comfy chair? Make-up or hair styling?
I don't spend that much time in the bedroom. I guess this is the part where I add that my boyfriend also lives here but has no design opinion whatsoever. So I do want to try and define a space for both of us. I hung the skirt on the wall to try and bring the orange reds and pinks around the room, but I have since taken it down. We usually play video games on the ps3, or watch a movie and go to sleep. I'll take my clothes and bring them to the bathroom where I get ready, so I don't really use it for much. I do read in bed. The reason I have a chair is because we dont have a tv in our living room, so company will come into the bedroom to play video games and whatnot. In my living room, I have my computer for movies and tv, etc.

What are the colors, paint and bedding you have chosen? Are they what's in the room now, or will you be changing all of them?

The colors I like are pretty much in the room now. I like the mustard yellow gold in the rug (and have considered painting it with a white stripe or chevron?) The robin's egg and the grey, and the red orange are probably my favorite colors. I feel like there is alot of wood, and it is overwhelming.

What does the headboard you are planning to make look like?

I plan on painting a brick panel from lowe's matte white and hanging it from floor to ceiling behind the bed to bring the white from the ceiling down and the white from the bedding up, and breaking up the dark grey a little bit. That's next weekend's project. But that makes me wonder if using pallets to rest my mattress on would clash woods, or if I should paint them (white/black?) or what I should be putting my bed up on? I also wanted to hang some kind of art on top of the brick headboard. Another concern is the floor to ceiling expanse would make the bed itself look even smaller. A couple cool things about the brick panel is that It only needs a few nails to hold it up, I can take it from apartment to apartment and I can upholster it if I get bored. I also think it would add texture.

What's your budget like?
I have pretty much an open budget, I'd like to save up for a few things, but I like crafting and DIY too much to go buy a showroom set up for my bedroom. I want to put as much of myself into it as I can.

I like to add some upholstered pieces in the bedroom to add softness. I made an upholstered headboard for this purposes. It also makes a nice soft spot to lean on when reading in bed. You can pick any fabric and just need a piece of plywood or MDF, foam, batting and fabric. I think mine cost about $120. I used nailhead trim too to add detail.

In our last place we used a tv cable cover which can be painted the wall color. It really helps from seeing the black wires.

Pretty bedding. It looks like after you put the bed on pallets that you'll need some kind of skirting to cover it.

What did you chose for wall paint?

The paint I used is called wood smoke by glidden. Its an earthy brown grey tone. I think it pairs well with bright hues.

You know, just looking at that room, I had no idea it was shared by two people or that a guy lives there. Although the new bedding does have a more masculine feel to it than the old bedding.

And that dresser reads creamy white on my monitor. I had no idea it was blue.

So with that new information, here's what I'm thinking.

If you are concerned about the amount of wood in the room, I wouldn't use pallets under the bed. Why not just get a standard bed frame (currently on my Craigslist they are about $30-$40) and think up something interesting for a bed skirt?

think before you do anything else, you should get the bed up on a frame (or whatever you end up choosing to do), and get the headboard in place. Those two things will alter the appearance of the room enough that I think you should do those and then make the rest of your choices. And get the rug out from under the bed so you can see and appreciate the color of it.

You definitely need two nightstands. Get the bed to it's final height before you buy anything, so that you know how tall it will be. The nightstands should be close to the height of the bed. With the newer, thicker mattresses, a lot of older nightstands are too low.

It's said to be good feng shi for a couple to have matching nightstands, but that might not suit your style. You could have non-matching nightstands--a small chest of drawers for you, a table for him.

If you don't want a lot more wood in the room, consider a table with metal legs and a reclaimed wood top. You might also consider making one of the nightstands a round or oval table, to break up all the squares and rectangles going on in the room.

The current nightstand--I have to admit the current drawer pulls seem to be the wrong size or shape for it. I think you could do something colorful with the pulls, or add in a metallic touch here.

I'd move the current nightstand over to the windows next to the chair. Maybe use it to store some of the gaming necessities.

Consider adding a bench or chest to the foot of the bed. It would give you additional seating for game nights, and another place to inject a bit more of your style. (I admit all I can think of is people concentrating on their games, wiping their orange Cheetos fingers on your lovely new bedding or spilling sticky soda all over it.)

About the robin's egg blue of the chest of drawers. I think it can work well with your red/orange/mustard yellow, but I think you need at least two more touches of the blue in the room to make it work. Maybe change out the cushion on the chair to one with a print that has all your colors in it. Add a pillow to the bed that has the blue of the chest in it.

Then I'd consider getting curtains with a bit of a pattern to them, that ties in many of the colors in the room. I could see an ikat pattern, or something vaguely Moroccan in your space.

I like the idea of the brick panel headboard. But you will have to move the cute moose with the glasses. And bring back Sock Monkey--his colors are perfect for your room.
