What do you think of this replacement window quote?
Comments (2)Your windows are relatively large and the arched top windows are expensive when compared to a standard double hung. Laminated glass is not cheap either so when you figure that in with the price, your number is in line with what the market dictates for a good contractor....See MoreThoughts on Replacement Aluminum Windows?
Comments (12)Xena99, Contrary to what some people think, it's not the temperatures that are destroying your window frames, it's UV degradation - the bane of ALL plastics. Any plastic (pvc & fiberglass included) can be made more resistant to UV damage by simply painting it. When it comes to windows, you can install all of the hi-performance windows that you want, but my money will always be bet on storm windows - simply because they work. You can tint them or do whatever you want to them without hurting your new windows or their warranty. As a matter of fact, when properly installed they will actually extend the life of your new windows and the money you save on your heating/cooling costs will pay for the storm windows long before they wear out. Many articles have been written regarding the poor pay-back that results from hi-performance windows vs. added up front costs and the glass failures that only make the pay-back figures even worse. Here is a link that might be useful: Storm Windows...See MoreAnd then there were 3 - new build window package quotes in - thoughts?
Comments (5)I have double checked the quotes and they appear apples to apples related to options, glass, etc. I did find one error - both quotes had some units for a daylight basement, but ends up due to lot topography I won't be able to go that route. The Kolbe quote had a multi unit notated as basement - when in reality it is on the main - so when I pulled that out to compare quotes that was in error. When I add it back in and made sure that both quotes had the same number of units and configuration the figures have tighten quite a bit between the two offerings. (NOTE: I have been told Kolbe had a 4% price increase at the start of the year. Can anyone confirm? I have been told and I was working off a quote from December. The rep told me they passed some of the increase to me and absorbed some in their margin to moderate the increase from the December quote. The Marvin quote was just given in the last couple of weeks so I certain that is current pricing) In any case, now here are the final figures: Marvin Ultimate - $26,282 Kolbe Ultra Sterling Line - $23,905 (this includes a 3% discount if I pay in full via cash/check when the order is placed - have not inquired if Marvin distributor would offer same) So Millworkman - you were absolutely correct when you questioned the original price differential I noted between the two offerings. Thanks! So now with the Kolbe representing about a 10% savings over the Ultimates, does that sway opinion? If Marvin would offer the same 3% discount for full payment thus making it a 7% differential does that sway opinion?...See MoreI just received a quote to replace 18 windows with a Quaker Brand
Comments (9)We have used Home Depot windows in several homes and have been really pleased with the quality and the price, but we install them ourselves so that saves. And they have a number of finishes and done in vinyl.....but we live in a temperate area.....had Pella in our Wisconsin home and they had to be 30 years old and were going strong! You get what you pay for; i would not do cheapest nor most expensive but pick three mid range and then decide the pros and cons and then select based on what you like the best....See Moremmarse1
