Can't decide on a front door color. Pics included.

I'm residing my house and will be replacing my old, ugly steel door in the process.

This is the door I'll be putting in:

My siding will be James Hardie HardiPlank in Iron Gray with HardiTrim in arctic white. Here are a couple homes with Iron Gray (neither are mine):

I'm trying to figure out what color to paint the door. I know this forum recommends red quite a bit, but I'm not sure it's for me. Haven't ruled it out though. Another thread I browsed through had one color that I really liked, Benjamin Moore Galaxy. Here is a pic of that person's door:

My concern is that if I paint the door in Galaxy, there won't be enough contrast with the siding. Then I convince myself that the door is mostly glass, so it won't matter. Any suggestions?

I'm not much help since I cuurently cant decide on my own front door color, but anything goes with your siding and trim. Do you want something with pop & contrast or more neutral? A dark charcoal black, dark red, royal purple, or maybe a lighter silvery gray like the caning in the glass? Your door is beautiful.

I love the Galaxy, but I think your instincts are right that it won't be enough contrast with the siding, and may end up looking like a bad matching job.

What colors appeal to you? With the siding and trim you have chosen, you can practically do anything.

A rich teal could be wonderful, I could see a really deep orange, or a wonderful deep golden yellow, like fall mums.

Reds would work, but are probably the 'safer' choice, not that there is anything wrong with that.

But we also should consider your landscaping, any stone or brick on the house, etc.

We are thinking about purchasing this door. I have a hard time imagining how it will look when we donÃ¢ÂÂt even have a house yet. What do you guys think? Either that or a black door. But we have found this door at a very good price.

Love the idea of using the picture, cutting out the door, and checking color samples to get an idea. We have a new construction home that is "granite gray" (a medium tone gray) with white windows and trim. I love the contrast. We do have a 1/2 wall of brick in the front with a mix of neutrals (tans,whites,grays). I've been thinking of a plum or eggplant color for the front door. I do love the BM Cottage Red that Jan in WI has, but my husband is pretty conservative and that might be too much for him - but I'm sure we could work that out. ;-) Any thoughts or suggestions? I appreciate any additional input - I often refer to myself as "fasionably challenged" and this is my first time on this website/forum. Thanks (I will post a pic when I figure it out)

MsAnnie.. I so get the need for change-- especially after you've been through something big. I think changing the wall color is a great idea! I immediately thought a yellow/gold would brighten things up without changing the "feel" of the room too much-- but in one of the photos, I saw a close up of your sofa and wasnt sure how well it would work. It's so hard to tell with photos. I also think a sage green would work well. I know it's a color you see everywhere, but it is one of my "comfort colors". I just always feel good when wearing or seeing the various gray-greens and gold-greens. What colors make you feel good? Warm or cool?

Sigh... after doing some research on dying/staining white oak, I'm realizing that there are pros and cons to both. It's all very confusing. I'll inquire with my cab maker and see if they are experienced with different techniques for finishing the oak to get the look I want. I can't find any images of rift white oak that has flecks in it, but here's a photo of QS oak that shows what I'm looking for in the finish: It's a midtone, the flecks show through very nicely, the wood's shimmer shines through the stain, and the grain doesn't stand out as sharply as it does in my sample. Here are photos of my sample again, so you don't have to scroll all the way back up: If my cabinet maker can't achieve the look I want, what do you all think of the of the sample door? It will be going on all the doors and drawers of a 16' wall in my galley kitchen. Will it look good applied over a whole wall of cabinets? Or will that heavy grain be too much?

A jewel toned purple would be great with the deep gray and white trim. I am biased in loving that color, but it would be particularly good with your house. It would also be less expected....

Oh, that is my door. I did like that color, BM Galaxy (thank you Les) but now it is a dark navy. (Bench, too.) I liked the color because of the contrast to the tan color of the house.

I think yellow goes great with dark grey. I keep my door open as much as possible when I am at home so it was important to have a color that looked good with my interior space in the front of the house.

If you really wanted to be fun, you could do a granny smith apple green.

I instantly thought yellow when I saw your siding...and looks like I'm not the first! So make that two votes for a crisp happy yellow...and not school bus yellow...yellow doesn't have to be loud. Check out etsy pillows..there are tons of pillows in yellow and gray fabrics...very pretty combo.

In the following link I like the F&B Dayroom Yellow and the BM Calypso Orange with your color siding although a burnt orange would be nice as well.
