Lights Flickering...
Comments (4)All 4 LED Recessed lights on dimmer switch just started flickering. (4.5w dimmable GU10 LED bulbs) The dimmer switch is is also dimmable Lutron Diva C.L Dimmer Switch for Dimmable LED, Halogen and Incandescent Bulbs, with Wallplate, Single-Pole or 3-Way, DVWCL-153PH-LA - It only happens sometimes - 4 other LED's on a DIFFERENT dimmer switch (but same circuit) also flicker sometimes, whether the other dimmer switch is on or not. - It doesn't matter how bright I have the dimmer - They were fine for 2 years What could be causing this? Is it dangerous if the lights are on? If they are off? Thanks in advance for any help!...See MoreLED Puck Lights Flickering - My Fix
Comments (0)Posting this in case it helps someone with the same problem I had. I installed several sets of LED puck lights under my kitchen cabinets and they worked fine for about a month before they began to flicker and even fade. This happened independently (and not at the same time) to all 4 sets and had me puzzled for a while. These were sets purchased from Home Depot that had a switch (on the DC side of the transformer) and their own transformer which I had put into a junction box. I just left the switch on because I was using the wall switch to turn them on and off. It turns out that the switches that come with these lights are awful. When I opened up the junction boxes I discovered that when I held the switch hard in the on position the lights would be brighter and not flicker. So I merely cut out the switches and spliced the 12V wires together. Problem solved and a lot less stuff in the junction boxes!...See MoreLights flicker when heat pump turns on
Comments (16)Typically the reason lights flicker is due to a large load firing up and stealing available current in order to start up. This effect is worse if electrical connections aren't as tight as they should be, but this isn't the only reason why... it's often times a multitude of things. When a compressor starts up it is drawing what is called locked rotor amps. This happens with all single speed and 2 speed compressors. It is virtually eliminated with an inverter heat pump. If normal running amps of a modern AC is 10 amps or so, LRA during start up could be 20 amps maybe even as high as 30 amps. This happens only for a split second. If it lasted longer than that, it would pop the breaker. That is why you get the flicker in the lights. Adding a hard start for the compressor essentially speeds up the time of start up, makes the LRA draw on start up less severe, thus minimizing any light flicker. I think if you switched to LED lighting there might be less flickering (new bulb only as when these fail they often fail by flickering, rarely do they fail all at once and produce no light.) Because this is a heat pump, you should also check to make sure that emergency heat isn't coming on when the heat pump fires up. As this electrical load of heat strips, plus starting the compressor --- yeah that would easily be a recipe to make lights flicker....See MoreNew Build and lights flicker when plugging in to outlets
Comments (5)In our jurisdiction, for a new build the electrical authority takes great interest in such defects. As a builder, my electrical contractor put off repairs until I mentioned the magical word: inspection. And suddenly he had his best troubleshooter on site....See Moreregina_phalange
