Source for security pins (?) for double-hung windows?
Comments (8)Not seen those, but when my sashes are closed and locked, I added an extra security feature after hearing that the old sash locks could be opened. I drilled a small hole through each top corner of the lower sash, and partway through the bottom corners of the upper sash--and put in masonry nails. I just pull them out a bit to open the windows during the day, and close the window and push the nails back in at night. They can't be seen from outside, and are barely visible from the inside....See MoreGarden Windows vs. Double Hung Windows
Comments (6)This is just my opinion: I'd only consider a garden window IF: - I lived in a COLD climate, and -the window faced south or maybe west, and -it did not take away from the architectural style of my home and... -most importantly, I was actually going to use it to grow herbs in the winter, etc.! (A neighbor has one, but has stupid fake flowers & little figurines in it. Tacky.) When I lived in NYC, I would have LOVED one, as I loved having houseplants and kitchen herbs in a sunny window. But here in sunny SoCalif, I wouldn't haveÂor wantÂone, though plenty of people do. Ironically, I seldom see REAL plants in them. So, go figure. I also don't really like the boxy-ness of them, but that is a personal thing. As brushwork said: make sure it is quality all around. good luck!...See Morewoodwright double hung Vs 400 Series double hung
Comments (1)Andersens woodwright do have more of a wood interior. The structural performance is higher on the original 400 series TW where as the woodwrights will let more air through. So if you want the looks, get woodwright. If you want better performance, get the other. Also the exteriors of the sashes are not perma shield vinyl cladding. Comments (2)The reasoning behind this is the manufacturer doesn't make a good DH unit. The vinyl DH's need to be better built and stronger than the others. Anytime you have two fully functional sashes you require a more precise installation with more patience. The Single Hungs are just cheaper to make and easier to hang. Almost idiot proof in most cases. They are also more energy efficient from air infiltration becuase a lot of installers don't take the time to shim the DH unit properly. They end up leaking around the sashes, creating that ever so hated call back. With a stationary top sash they don't have to worry about anything leaking around the upper sash. The downfall of the SH is you can't tilt the sash in for cleaning. This can be quite trouble some for the windows off the ground a ways. There are ways around that for cleaning if shown the proper way. The history of the DH window goes back to the old farm houses that never had AC or Central Air. They would pull the top sash down about six inches and the lower sash up about six inches. This would let the air circulate better in each room by creating the drafting affect (Firefighters call it breathing during a house fire). With todays AC in almost every house the DH windows aren't really required for the drafting situation. You can still get them from almost every dealer. If they are balking at DH's with reasoning like they gave you. I would steer clear of them and start shopping for another supplier. Hope this makes sense to you. God Luck!!!...See Morenellie820
